Interests and posts here are mainly #retrocomputing #vintagecomputers especially Commodore 64 stuff.

I have other accounts for #photography and music especially #vinyl and #cassettes

Currently working on (very slowly) #Discogs64 on the #C64, writing my book which I have been doing for the last 10 years, and getting my record shop and blog slowly set up.

Also #NFFC fan for 40+ years (good grief)

#geocaching again after 20 years away!!

OK this has got to be one of the weirdest images on Amazon. It's an image for Croc toes. You get a rubber toe for $12 and put it on your Crocs, so it looks like your toe is sticking out. Just wait until that poor kid opens the box and sees it's full of toes (or maybe just one toe in a lot of wrapping?). In my head, this whole thing is a scene from a horror movie. #AmazonFinds

@Hundstrasse I have three out of four of those things. I can make the hole. But not the toad.

I really ought to get out more and do a bit of exercise (my recent bad back episode definitely made me think that would be a good idea) so I am thinking of restarting geocaching, and leaving a plastic ox in each suitably-sized cache would be a cool visiting token I reckon 🐂

jonnypencils,
@jonnypencils@mastodon.social avatar

@llamasoft_ox I used to love geocaching! A great excuse for a walk. I don’t know why we stopped doing it but maybe it’s time to start again!

I can’t help feeling that giving some of my grandkids a BBC micro, and cassette player, and the BASIC manual would help them learn so much. Sadly I’d have to lock them in a sealed room for a year as well, they would get so bored these days I bet. They just don’t appreciate quite how much happens behind the scenes on their gadgets. The layers and layers of code and hardware. Shame…

jonnypencils,
@jonnypencils@mastodon.social avatar

@revk My wife has arranged for every child in her class to get a microbit next term. It isn’t quite the same as sitting in your bedroom with an 80s micro, from which we all learned so, so much, but it is a start and I think (hope) it could spark the same kind of interest and enthusiasm.

Does anyone know what the deal is with when Mastodon does or does not store the application used for a toot? There doesn't appear to be a parameter to pass to the API when creating a status.

All toots that come from Ivory (like this one) have it, but some from my custom applications don't but I don't know why.

Solved: that data isn't federated across instances: https://mastodon.social/@jonnypencils/112212281348808881

jonnypencils,
@jonnypencils@mastodon.social avatar

@robb It also only shows on toots/users from the instance you are on yourself.

Your toot, for example, shown below compared to one on the same instance as me.

Toot from somebody on my instance clearly showing the app used.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Yes, quite a few. I go to Hay Literature Festival most years and it’s a great place to snag signed copies and to meet the authors. Got some goodies - Stephen Fry, Gilbert & George, Richard Dawkins, Brian May - quite a few others !

I wonder if this is an age thing. I hope not. I want to stay curious and up to date with technology, but I’m finding it very difficult to drum up any enthusiasm at all for - just leaves me cold.

I have, however, just ordered a 40 year old dot matrix printer so yeah, maybe it’s an age thing 😂

    I'd forgotten how good #affinity photo/designer/publisher was. I bought them all last year in the Black Friday sale but for some reason kept using PS Elements. Now, thanks to a bug in PSE on macOS Sonoma, and Adobe's fix being 'just upgrade to 2024 for £100' I have deleted PS and gone all in with Affinity. It's very good!
