Car key fobs should be extremely difficult to activate in one’s pocket and arguably remote start should be the only thing that functions beyond like 10 feet. Or the dang things should be configurable.

I’m certain that the inadvertent trunk release that lead to theft of music equipment out of my vehicle was a result of changing the fob batteries. I can see my car from my place but it should be too far away to activate anything on it.

jmichaelward,
@jmichaelward@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer Indeed, I tested whether it locked my vehicle, but I didn't test each individual button. If my trunk was open, I failed to notice it.

Confirmed: if you leave music equipment in your car and accidentally leave a door open, that gear will be stolen.

For me, a set of cymbals, a snare drum, kick pedal, two floor stands, and my favorite backpack. Nothing that can’t be replaced, but the timing is very bad for me since I can’t make any major purchases right now and we’re playing a show and recording this month.

@stevegrunwell Everywhere I’ve looked online, people want to increase the operating distance for their car key fobs. I want to reduce it to almost zero.

I was today years old when I learned that my father has a brother.

@chris No importance, really. He’s the son of my grandpa whom I’ve only met one time in my life when I was very little.

This is not the colour a beer should have. It was remarkably tasty though.

@derickr Hey you found a can of Slurm!

Taking my first day off tomorrow since starting my new job back mid-February. No travel planned or anything, just a good old fashioned long holiday weekend. Some well-needed R&R to recharge and get ready to dig in some more after I get back.

@stevegrunwell giving a shout-out to @derickr about Xdebug in his Technical Debt talk makes me realize I've been convincing people to use it for step debugging for almost a decade.

Separating reads from writes and having smaller controllers that are easier to follow seems like an excellent case for CQRS. A lot of code out there is trying to do way too much, so I'm all for breaking things down into smaller responsibilities. @grmpyprogrammer

@grmpyprogrammer talking about "the blurry shape of what code should look like" takes me back, once again, to John Kary's excellent talk, "Rethinking Loops", from way back at Midwest PHP 2016. There's no presentation that's had a bigger impact on my career. https://johnkary.net/slides/loops/midwest-php-2016/#/

There’s no substitute for an in-person conference. I’m having the best time.

Kevin Casey’s talk is reminding me that I still haven’t seen any presentations about chaos engineering in the PHP space. Kevin’s session was about mitigating system failures and chaos engineering is all about purposefully introducing failures to test systems resiliency. Casey Rosenthal from Verica (and formerly of Netflix) wrote a book on the topic.

    @chris I’m just starting the process of assuming mine so I’ll take those feelings over from you.
