That distributed companies need to run at least one physical, in-person all-hands gathering per year is pretty well established.

But what would you argue is the minimum and maximum length for such a gathering to be useful? Or what's the ideal length, if there is such a thing?

@xahteiwi I think 5 days (Mon-Fr) including travel makes it ideal. So Monday and Friday are travel days. Put less important/optional things to Thursday, so people with tighter personal schedules/commitments can leave early.

@xahteiwi I don't consider hackathons part of the all hands. Our company has established a hack Friday every month where you can sit down with anyone in the company and hack along. This works, as engineering is only in two adjacent timezones.

Also the regular schedule helps to persuade more complex goals.

@xahteiwi on the other hand, making it longer than a work week will make it really hard to attend for people with families. Especially, if you are typically in the home office, the distribution of care work is built around that fact.

@xahteiwi I don't have a solution for that. Our team/company events usually are very shallow on that topic and more focused on team building.

@isotopp @vogelchr nicht zu unterschätzen ist da glaube ich die Zulieferindustrie. All die kleineren Maschinenbauer die Maschinen und Teile für Verbrennungsmotoren bauen. Für die sieht die Zukunft schlecht aus.

    @SheDrivesMobility @dnkrupinski ich bin mittlerweile zu dem Schluss gekommen, das Facebook und TikTok Kommentare näher an der Realität sind als das Fediverse. Jedenfalls gilt das hier auf dem Land im Speckgürtel von Karlsruhe.

    Das stimmt. Macht es manchmal im Alltag nicht leichter, wenn man so sonst eher mit Menschen zu tun hat die der Facebookkommentarspalte näher ist als dem Fediverse.

    @mdione @xahteiwi Most code bases have thorough unit tests and very few integration tests. Guest what kind of tests you throw out the window with a major rewrite...

    Das eine ergonomische Tastatur bei Schmerzen in den Handgelenken und Ellbogen hilft, weiss ich. Aber bringt es auch etwas bei Rückenschmerzen, die man offensichtlicherweise durch am Rechner sitzen/stehen hat?

    @oliver ich glaube da hilft nur Muskeltraining für die Rumpfmuskulatur. Das hat bei mir einiges gebracht

    1. Find a replacement for Sundar. This person needs to be both able if articulating a coherent vision for Google as a company, and inspire great engineers to want to work on great problems.

    Don't know if I reach any game developer. But games need a "adult mode" as in "I haven't played the game for weeks because life happened. Please give me a ramp up of the story so far and an option for a short tutorial with all the controls and mechanics".

    Resilienz und Redundanz im #Schienenverkehr #Bahnverkehr #Eisenbahn ist extrem wichtig (und wurde, wo vorhanden, kaputt gespart) - ob Fernverkehr oder auch gerade dem #ÖPNV.

    Es kann nicht angehen dass ein einziger Unfall oder medizinische Versorgung so häufig zig tausende Menschen betrifft!

    @oliof @isotopp Es könnte sich als Startup sogar lohnen den ganzen AI Kram (Storage+GPUs) on Prem zu haben, aber den "Business Logic" Teil, aka Web-Frontends, Userverwaltung, $Integrations in der Cloud, wenn man nicht zuviel Infrastruktur an den Hacken haben möchte.

    Yeah, sure, but ...

    Good luck finding such an attack in proprietary code.
    Via the cliché paid off/blackmailed employee, hacked dev servers/repos, or via capitalism's favorite cost-cutting measure: a remote "offshored" contracted temporary developer (or nowadays, embedded into some LLM output).

    If anything, Open Source Security has worked.

    @pjakobs @larsmb please have a look at the PR. Then you understand, that the maintainer itself made the bogus commits. So by definition, they didn't catched it.
