Rarely entirely serious. Fond of otters and dogs, scarily obsessive about music and old videogames. Boosts absolutely are endorsements; it's why I boosted them. He/him.

Advice needed from PC gamers who run Linux, please!

I’m thinking seriously about ditching Windows on my main PC. The only reason I haven’t done so years ago is gaming. I have a massive library on Steam and I really don’t want to kiss that goodbye.

I understand Linux gaming has got wildly better in recent years. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good primer on the subject? Debian or Debian-like focused preferably, as that’s what I’m most comfortable with.

Small whinge about #Starfield: given the sheer volume of stuff bad guys drop (like, seriously, even the most cursory firefight is going to net you 10 guns and at least 2 space suits), given the wide variety of things you need for the (over)complicated crafting system, and given how little storage there is on the Frontier … it is way, WAY too easy to end up overencumbered. They really didn’t think that one through.

Well, yes. Obviously. The “metaverse” is silly.

My "get rid of the years of crap in my filing cabinets" adventure continues. I've now managed to score a relatively high end document scanner from a couple of generations ago for £60 on fleabay. Just the thing for bulk scanning stuff into paperless-ngx!

Trust Morrissey to make the death of Sinead O’Connor about him.

Getting a bit tired of my crappy £25 shredder that overheats after ~50 pages.

Any recommendations for a more robust shredder that can chew through hundreds of pages before it needs a rest?

“classic” movies I have subjected my children to so far:

Jaws - big hit
Predator - VERY big hit
Alien - meh. Too much of a slow burn for them. Sigh.
ET - no shits given. Fair. It doesn’t really hold up.
Indiana Jone and the Temple of Doom - “that was rubbish, Dad”
The Princess Bride - totally obsessed for a while: all catchphrases learned word for word

Fascinating and insightful article on British accents and how they affect how we perceive people. If I’m really honest it is basically how my own prejudices play out in my head; I do tend to make snap judgments about people based on how they speak, far more than the content of what they say. It’s something I work on avoiding every day.

Given the antics of the likes of that Wragg twit, I wonder if we might be better served by banning the sale of smartphones to Tory MPs.

So far today I have:

  • Done a bunch of work
  • Walked Dogbert 7.3km, much of it uphill
  • Mowed the back lawn
  • Hacked up a dead tree
  • Taken four carloads of garden waste to the dump (mostly said dead tree)
  • Sprayed the shit out of the thistles that have started poking up through the patio
  • Wondered what that smell is
  • Realised it’s me
  • Wondered why
  • Realised that I’d forgotten to shower or brush my teeth
  • Showered and brushed my teeth

How’s your Saturday?

Zen Internet seems to have chosen today (of all days) for its network to have a little lie down? Any other #ZenInternet users out there having issues?

Here’s Bobdog, aka Dogbert. He’s a former Hungarian street dog. He’s a bit smelly, tends to bark at things like empty plastic bags or trees where he once saw a squirrel two years ago, and every so often he vanishes into the next county in pursuit of deer, but he’s very fluffy and soft, incredibly friendly and affectionate, can detect cheese at 500 paces, and will do anything for pizza. #PetIntelligence #DogsOfMastodon

The normal state of Secondborn's bedrooom is a circle of hell; clothes, towels, art supplies and cat toys sort of Tracey Emin-ed all over the place.

Today: spotless. Not a thing out of place. You can see the carpet.

I'm suspicious. I think she probably wants something.

Denis Villeneuve really missed a trick with Dune Part Two. Imagine having Christopher Walken in Dune and not having him say “If you walk without rhythm, you won’t attract the worm”.

For years, I've self-hosted my personal email. Until a couple of weeks ago, when I realised that I just couldn't be arsed any more. It's just too much like work.

Happily, there's @protonmail which does everything I need for far less than I was paying in VPS charges for my mail server, which genuinely seems to take user privacy seriously, and which just seems to work, with nae bother.

Am I throwing in the towel? Yeah, kind of. I'll hand my self-hosting creds in at the door.

I continue to be so incredibly impressed by Secondborn's artwork. For a 12 year old to be this good just blows my paternal mind.
