Maybe the US system doesn’t work that way because people keep screaming at everyone who doesn’t vote for their one party vs the only other. It’s really odd to claim that your vote matters and then yell at anyone who tries to do anything with their vote other than to guarantee their vote for one of two parties. If the argument is to preserve democracy, well, it already looks like we don’t have democracy.

If only there was a way to increase voter turnout, like giving voters what they want… nah, that’d make too much sense. The democrats are too smart to give people what they want.

That would require getting cozy with billionaires who are opposed to progressive causes. How is that supposed to work? What you’re proposing is like starting a game of monopoly where the other players own 90% of the properties already and claiming that if you just play along and hopefully land on properties that aren’t already owned then maybe you can trade your way up to establish yourself. How likely do you think this is to work?

The “reality observers” that gave trump the election in 2016? Brilliant strategy, “reality observer”.

@hark@lemmy.world avatar

How are we supposed to break out of such a system? Both parties benefit from this system and will never agree to change it. About a decade ago in Canada, the liberal party claimed they’d carry out election reform if they won. They ended up winning big time, but they refused to do what they promised because it would threaten the power structure.

That soon? You’re being too optimistic.

Or maybe the centrists turn out because they’re the ones that democrats appeal to. Obama ran on a progressive campaign and won big in 2008, so it’s clear that it works. The problem is that he then immediately turned around and instituted centrist policy as usual.

So is this accelerationism or does it not count when democrats do it?:

theguardian.com/…/the-democrats-are-purposely-boo…

opensecrets.org/…/democrats-spend-millions-on-rep…

biden pushing billions of dollars towards israel against the wishes of people who vote for him is pro-democratic?:

news.gallup.com/…/majority-disapprove-israeli-act…

How about their rigged primaries keeping progressives out? Is that pro-democratic?:

observer.com/…/court-admits-dnc-and-debbie-wasser…

I suppose it’s pro-democratic party, but the party’s name is ironic.

You think leftists online are accelerationists because they criticize democrats, but you don’t think democrats are accelerationists for outright funding fascists?! Are you being serious?

Yeah, I was also there in 2016 and I remember people like you claiming that hillary was the best shot we had against trump and that it’s smart that hillary’s team boosted trump because he’d be so easy to win against. The result of the 2016 election should’ve shut people like you up forever, but instead you all pretend like you’re the smartest people on earth.

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

You fight harder against leftists than you do against the democratic party that is funding fascists. In fact, you even defend democrats funding fascists.

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

Funny because I was huge supporter for Bernie and ended up voting for hillary in the general because I had no other choice. I guess 2016 broke your brain and you’ve adopted the mindset of the democrats you fought against in 2016.

Which part am I wrong about? Obama ran on affordable healthcare, abortion rights, being anti-bailout for too-big-to-fail entities, and being anti-war. He won a supermajority. Then he scaled back his healthcare plan, said abortion rights “aren’t a top priority”, continued bush’s bailouts and added more, and invaded/bombed more countries during his term.

We had a strong labor movement but it took decades of fighting, the largest economic crisis ever, and two world wars, among other things to establish a middle class as we used to know it. It took much less time for the rich to dismantle that. I agree we should keep working to push the power of labor, but reaching our goals while working within the system is going to be impossible. There’s a reason why it took such catastrophic events to actually get anywhere.

So do you think republicans are catering to centrists with their full dive into fascism or do you think only democrats need to appeal to “centrists” for some reason?

Would’ve probably turned out different if Valve was beholden to shareholders and the never-ending hunger for a higher stock price. The push to drive “shareholder value” is one of the most destructive forces if not the most destructive force we’re dealing with these days.

Taiwan is selling more to the US than China in major shift away from Beijing (apnews.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Whether it’s tapioca balls or computer chips, Taiwan is stretching toward the United States and away from China — the world’s No. 2 economy that threatens to take the democratically ruled island by force if necessary....

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

Well yeah, didn’t the US impose trade restrictions with China even on countries that aren’t the US?

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

A table full of money would be things like “government-provided healthcare” and “drugs legalized”, not “one specific healthcare need made affordable” and “one of the most mild illegal drugs made slightly less illegal”.

Will the price be jacked up like the F-150 Lightning?

This is a prime example of why the “code is law” selling point for smart contracts is a disaster waiting to happen. Proponents claim you won’t need lawyers, arbitrators, courts, etc, but in reality you’ll need all those and on top of that programmers to write and verify smart contracts.

US intelligence fearmongering with shallowfakes.

How do you think we got trump in the first place? The awfulness of the republican party did not begin with him and will not end with him, but the whole time democrats have insisted that we need a republican party. It’s a tag team play that ends in fascism regardless. If trump is beaten, the next bogeyman will be there for democrats to point at and claim “we just need to beat this one guy and then we’ll work on issues you care about, we swear” yet again.

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

I wrote one sentence pointing out how biden’s actions run directly counter to “we want to live” and then asked a question for clarification. You jumped in and twisted yourself into a pretzel to tell me how much I’ve missed the point without actually explaining how.

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

Is that why biden loves sending billions of dollars of weapons to israel to create more Palestinian corpses?

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

That’s fair, but I think there’s room for disagreement on how to pressure biden and if biden is actually even better for Palestinians at all. After all, biden has been the top supporter of israel for his entire career and is the top recipient of money from pro-israel donors by a huge margin:

www.opensecrets.org/industries/summary?cycle=All&…

So far biden has given israel everything they’ve wanted or needed. There is the case where he withheld weapons (but not “defensive” weapons) because of Rafah, but by that point israel already has more than enough to level the entire area and biden is already back to moving things forward for future weapon shipments. Clearly biden doesn’t feel pressured enough to truly change his ways and I don’t know how guaranteeing your vote will add pressure. I’m not saying to vote for trump, I myself will be voting for biden, but I feel like we shouldn’t telegraph guaranteed votes to biden and the democrats no matter what they do. That’s just a recipe for them taking you for granted and letting them get away with whatever they want.
