My brain is, to be fair, always a bit wobbly (anxiety [general and social] + persistent depressive disorder, whee), but it's been a little rougher than usual recently.

It's all been making me even quieter online, but I'm pushing back against that to tell y'all something very important: I have a lapful of Sinha, and he is warm and soft and lovely. I'm very grateful that he's a lapcat.

The whole emotional journey I had getting a phone call from my mother in the morning without preamble, learning that she's in the ER, but she's fine... I'm glad my mother is telling us things now though!

On this topic, it has actually taken my bro and I a long time and a lot of patience in communication to convey to our mother that we want to know if anything happens. There's that pride of being an Elder (cannot share worries, cannot share pain, cannot share health issues), mixed with not wanting to worry us ("what can you do, so far away?"), but it's also really hard to plan contingencies if we have zero knowledge about her health. Knowing disease progression and her day to day allows us to adjust, buy things that can help, look for more resources... And also for me to plan my timeline to go back to Malaysia (I'm thinking probably in the next two years)

To anyone who has parents you care for, and they are similarly stubborn, there's hope! You can change this! (Of course this also goes both ways. My bro and I also tell her when we are unwell or not doing great)

The ice-cream place there (Kow Po) hasn't changed the way they made ice-cream in years. Used to be a treat for us when we were kids. A very nostalgic place (we haven't been back in quite a number of years though)

When we first moved here, 45 made it impossible for foreign spouses to work. So my wife went back to school and today, she’s graduating with her Bachelors in Psychology. Next stop: grad school! (Thankful for California’s excellent public universities system, and resident tuition!)

Sabrena felt she got an excellent education at SF State, and is looking forward to start the clinical psychology masters program to be your friendly multilingual culturally relevant therapist in a few years
