@ironicbadger - I was just listening to the latest episode of #SelfHosted where you talk about using a travel router and it got me to wondering if you know how to fix the bug that prevents the @tailscale exit node feature from working on the GL.iNet OS. I’ve got a GL-A1300 and have learned there’s a bug related to the routing tables that breaks all outbound traffic when the exit node feature is enabled.

genebean, to NixOS

I’m impressed enough with native (systemd-nspawn) containers that I think I’m going to use them for more parts of my home server as a way of providing a tad bit more isolation between services.

@ironicbadger When you talk about the Peppa Pig you kiddo watches, is it the videos from https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFEgnf4tmQe8H-ZV_OQ2UwuYZRLZAUoQq or something else? Asking b/c I want to archive them in Jellyfin for my kiddo too.

genebean,

@ironicbadger yeah, I meant was that the actual list of episodes you use? I know nothing about the show yet except that our kiddos like it

#NixOS win: I finally figured out how to make a single network interface have a native ip while also bridging a vlan so that I can put virtual machines on a different network.

genebean,

@noflcl will do tonight or tomorrow… still tweak it a little 😁

genebean, to homelab

Hey @ironicbadger, @popey, & other users: what tools and processes do you use to back up your ZFS-based storage? Like most homelabers, I have a mix of file types and databases that I need to account for.
[ ]

genebean,

@ironicbadger @popey let’s assume I’d be really upset if I lost the data. Part of it’s going to be #Nextcloud which will include what I’ve previously kept on Dropbox & Google Drive. Another part will be #Audiobookshelf files that could be replaced, but would be a giant pain. Another part will be recipes and I think that would likely be irreplaceable in some cases.

genebean,

@ironicbadger @popey are there any good options that don’t include #ZFS on the other end? Maybe something that can be stored in Backblaze B2?

genebean,

@ironicbadger I was wondering about , but was avoiding mentioning tool names to see what other thought. Have you seen any particular challenges with restic for ZFS?

genebean,

@ironicbadger sounds like replicating ZFS and then archiving with restic from the replica that isn’t getting other writes might work well.

Spent much of today rewiring my #homelab with a new Unifi PDU Pro, moving new hard drives around that finished their initial burn-in ritual whilst I was away last week.

Also installed a new 8 port KVM switch to sit in front of PiKVM.

I filmed it but now I gotta edit the darned thing. #YouTuberLife

genebean,

@ironicbadger I’m keen to hear about the kvm setup

genebean, to fediverse

I recently spoke with @Edent on Volunteer Technologist about memorial benches, @openstreetmap, and the #Fediverse. Here's a clip talking about the amazing number of benches that have been cataloged, and you can find the entire episode Apple & Spotify now and in #Podcasting 2.0 apps later today (I just changed #podcast hosts and some things are still updating)

I want a Fediverse alternative to LinkedIn. I think that would be pretty cool.

Me too @btp

genebean, to ADHD

@ironicbadger - you mentioned journaling in Self Hosted 115… have you looked at the structure / process called bullet journaling? https://bulletjournal.com is the foundation. It really helps with #ADD / #ADHD. Also, you ever want to nerd out on #FountainPens, hit me up... I’m soooo addicted to them!

I stumbled on Libation, a desktop app which downloads your Audible audiobooks and removes the DRM. Handy. Works on Windows, macOS and Linux. I made a snap of it, so it's easy to install too.
https://snapcraft.io/libation

genebean,

@popey once the books are downloaded and cleaned of drm, can you export them as m4b’s? Asking because I’ve been using a paid macOS app for this but would love a foss alternative, especially a cross platform one.

I’m pretty stoked to see that there is support for doing a dns challenge to Gandi with the library #Nix uses to obtain Let’s Encrypt certificates for use with #Nginx. This is going to be nice for a server that isn’t directly exposed to the internet.

genebean, to python

Tonight I figured out how to use #python to get historical location information from the api of my @homeassistant instance, transform it, and send it via http to my @owntracks Recorder instance as a means of backfilling some missing data. Next up: creating an automation that does the same thing in realtime 🤖
[#HomeAssistant #OwnTracks ]

genebean,

@bh @homeassistant @owntracks how do you look at that data?

b0rk, to random
@b0rk@jvns.ca avatar

there's something weird about git branches that "a branch is just a reference to a commit" does not capture and I've been struggling with it for weeks

like in this diagram I think most people would say that there are 3 branches (corresponding to the 3 commits at the top of the diagram), though technically in git you could have 0, 3, or 100 branches here, and it's not labelled so you have no way to know how many branches there are

(please don't try to explain branches to me ty)

genebean,

@b0rk this matches my mental model and corresponds to how tools like GitKraken visualize a repository.

genebean,

@b0rk pardon me if you’re already answered this, but are you working on something you plan to publish with all these git diagrams? If so, I’m really interested in the end result

genebean, to random

I have been using @owntracks recorder for years, but just discovered that a while back it stopped recording data... I see it being posted to the server and turning on debug logging shows the data getting to ot-recorder and what appears to be it parsing the data, but no corresponding device has been crated for my user. It seems that my device id changed when I reset my phone a while back and again when I got a new phone, but I don't understand why just my first device is showing up Any ideas?

genebean,

@owntracks FML... at some point it seems I dropped the /pub from the url in my phone's OwnTracks app so it has been posting the data to / instead which seems to have been lost in the ether :(

genebean,

@owntracks yeah, this is totally my fault.

genebean, to random

@mouse - are there by chance any mobile apps that work with #BookWyrm?

genebean,

@mouse no problem! I was just curious. Was hoping maybe it could be supported in @woollyapp or @mammoth or similar.
