@rauschma An old problem. I seem to recall that in past years Chrome folks wanted to move away from the padlock, but too much of the web still used HTTP to assume that HTTPS was the default state

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@rauschma Agreed, I like that the new icon better communicates the functionality behind it and that secure connections are now the default state

BTW, the menu is super useful for quickly accessing site permissions. For example, I just hopped into a Google Meet call and opened the menu. As you can see, this provides the ability to toggle access to the camera, microphone, notifications, and sound permission grants. Very nice :)

I've been on the fence about getting a new Mac for a while and I think trying to compile Chromium may be pushing me over the edge

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

At the moment I'm using a 15" 2014 MacBook Pro. It's been a solid workhorse for almost a decade now. I wasn't too bothered when it stopped getting the new OSs, but once some apps I use stopped getting updates … well, that's when I started to realize I may need to seriously consider an upgrade

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

As a machine I'll be using as a daily driver for hopefully another decade, I'd ideally like something powerful, with plenty of RAM, and a good amount of internal storage

I like the current crop of Pros, but ideally I'd like something lighter as I'm more mobile these days than I used to be. MacBook Airs are a very attractive option as they're super portable and powerful. The only problem is that 13" tends to be a bit small for my taste. ATM the rumored 15" M2 MacBook Air look like the best bet

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

Only thing is, this week I started to try to get Chromium building and I'm only now realizing that the project's build cluster uses macOS SDK 13.3. I can only get an XCode build that supports up to 12.1

In other words, I have a legit business need for newer hardware. And since WWDC is only a little over a month away, there are some attractive discounts on M1 devices

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

I don't want to get something and either return it after a few weeks or try to sell it at a loss to pick up the device I actually want. At the same time, I'm not sure if I can put off upgrading

ATM I'm thinking about doing something that might be stupid: getting a cheap MacMini to use as my daily driver for the next month or two, then pick up an 15" Air if/when it comes out. Once I have the Air, I switch the mini to be a dedicated streaming machine, act as a NAS, run backups, etc.

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@eob This sounds like a solid suggestion to fix my most immediate problem: I can't build Chromium on this computer. I was thinking about picking up something today to unstuck myself (https://toot.cafe/@dotproto/110278382802166034), but maybe I can just build in the cloud and leave the macOS builds to Chromium's build cluster

@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

Update: found a temporary workaround. After @eob’s suggestion (link below), I found a cloud service to rent time on M2 hardware. It’s not a perfect solution, but hopefully it will serve until the next round of Apple hardware is announced

I've got some bad news and some good news...

The good news is I'm on a horse! 🐴

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@rachelnabors I’m sorry. I can’t help but feel like so these layoffs are short sighted and counter productive. They were lucky to have you in the first place and are foolish for not doing everything they can to keep you there

After this week I feel like my consistency is a real thing, not just a daydream or something to do between interviewing and applying to other companies

  • new company bank account
  • published an MVP website: https://incremental.software
  • met with 3 clients, one of which found out about me this week
  • one client organically and emphatically posted a recommendation to work with me
  • started talking to and scoping out potential work with a new lead
  • got more of my internal workflow setup
dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

There’s still a lot to do and I can’t help but be anxious about some things, but it’s important to recognize and celebrate my successes. I’m making progress, I’m getting paid, and interest is growing.

So Google is now preventing people from removing location data from photos taken with Pixel phones.

Remember when Google's corporate motto was "don't be evil?"

Obviously, accurate location data on photos is more useful to a data mining operation like Google.

From Google: "Important: You can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location."

It's enshitification in action.

@ajsadauskas @alan @technology @pluralistic You're talking about Photos, not the camera app. You can disable location data collection in the camera app: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/9921876?hl=en#zippy=%2Cgoogle-devices

Cameras write location data to the image itself as metadata. If they're using a content addressable storage system, they can't update this data without changing the underlying image itself. Seems like edits in Photos are stored separate from the image itself. Editing image metadata may require architectural changes.

What would you do if you suddenly had oodles of free time on your hands?

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@rachelnabors I’m actively finding that out. So far the answer is “keep answering questions and trying to help people, but with more sleep and no OKRs”

I'm seriously thinking about creating a newsletter for stuff happening in the browser extension dev world. ATM the thing I'm trying to decide is whether this should be offered on my personal site or on my consultancy's site

I keep finding myself on Twitter despite not wanting to be there. There must be a reason. Something about the people I follow, the UX, the visual design, the reach, I don’t know. What I do know is that Mastodon isn’t scratching that same itch and I wish it did

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@VamptVo good points all around. I think you’re right about the lizard brain, especially respect to social validation. More than once I’ve found myself wishing favs were more similar to likes on Twitter, but what I’m looking for is social validation that a post I think is interesting is interesting to people in general or the people I follow. How can I quickly tell if I’m one of the cool kids?

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@VamptVo I know that’s probably not a great impulse, but I feel the pull to see if someone is getting ratioed, how much reaction it’s getting, to be told “you should have an opinion on this.” There’s a passive entertainment value to the endless scrolling

As I spend more time around these parts I'm a little surprised how much I miss the way Twitter dot com's renders a tweet thread in the main timeline view

dotproto,

@aral @MonaApp Just installed it an IMMEDIATELY felt the improvement with two threads right at the top of my timeline. Thanks for the rec!
