Now there’s a GE on the way, recommendations for UK politics accounts and politics commentators who actually regularly post here (not just sporadic broadcasting or accounts that have been inactive since 2022) would be fab, if anyone has some. (Don’t worry – I won’t flood feeds with any of this stuff, although I may be a bit giddy on the night of 4 July, unless polling radically shifts before then.)

Nice that Sunak led with furlough, which fucked over millions of self-employed people.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@sdarlington It’s astonishing. My MP’s response to me was “everyone has to make sacrifices”. Yeah. Self-employed people got nothing. PAYE people were getting a big chunk of their wages. Although I doubt that many people are fully aware of that.

@crutlefish @sdarlington If someone’s set fire to your shed, maybe eject them from the garden, even if the next person you invite in may not have the money to fully rebuild it.

Apropos of nothing (just yet), but finally sorted out registering to vote by post. It was dead easy to do online.

@pete Yep.

Well, except in Brighton and Bristol Central: 🟢

And a chunk of the south and south west: 🐥

(I mean, it’s a yellow bird, so LD, right?)

@pete A very, very, very slim chance the Lib Dem might squeak it here. I hope so. She seems good. (Zero chance for the Greens or Labour. I’d say 99% likely the Tory will cling on, albeit with a massively reduced majority that the following day will have local Lib and Lab people accusing each other of not getting out the way.)

Heh. I had this happen to me one time. I worked for the marketing team of a tech company looking to branch out into web design. I was the designer. We got a great lead. My manager forced me to wear a suit, which I said was a bad idea. She argued we had to make a “good impression”. The meeting went very well. They loved my ideas. We didn’t get the gig. I later heard: “We just didn’t trust a designer wearing a suit.”

@Richr @Clearleft “Taken on September 10, 2005”

That photo will be 20 next year. Jeepers.

As for ties… yeah. I was forced to wear one of those as well. On the plus side, my manager never again told me what to wear for any meeting. Not that I was there for an awful lot longer anyway.

TDYK is bad. But it’s also worth noting this bundle can optionally also include the entire Hellboy run as well. So if you didn’t pick up the previous DH Hellboy HB, this one is a bargain.

Also: good job, DH, in carefully considering the tiers that way. Unlike Titan, which has now issued a fourth Doctor Who bundle but always reserves the new additions for the most expensive tier.

Getting dangerously close to burn out. I can see an end in sight, days away. Not relishing the next few days though. :/

IGN just ate Gamer Network. :/

The RPS editor’s been fired. Hard to see the voice of RPS and Eurogamer surviving, although fingers crossed both won’t just be mashed into IGN with a fork.

Funny how when I was a kid, I always dreamed of working on a games mag. Now, there are almost no paper mags left and the online ones are vanishing at speed.

Wondering how big a Game Boy can get before things start getting a wee bit silly.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

Older me is currently wondering how younger me ever dealt with that tiny Game Boy Micro display.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@flargh I think I’m slowly hitting the thing my optician warned me about years ago: the reading glasses zone. I’m not there yet, but I now have to take my glasses for myopia off before I read some stuff. And a small number of things are now gone (like the grey-on-grey text on Apple plugs). I imagine the GB Micro might be a bit much. And I’m mulling over whether going down a size of phone next time would be a very bad idea.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@jsit TBF, it’s been a LONG while since I fired any of the old Nintendo consoles up for anything serious. They all sit in a drawer, getting increasingly grumpy that I won’t play anything on them.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@davidbcohen @flargh I wish I’d had the guts to have lasik. My BIL did and he ended up with 20:20. But I’m too old now, and even if I wasn’t I’d be too scared of something going wrong (such as the common night halos).

The thought of multiple glasses fills me with horror though. I already cart about two pairs. I really don’t want two more. Perhaps I’ll just ZOOM EVERYTHING ON MY PHONE.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@davidbcohen @flargh BIL had halos but they went away, I think. I’d put up with reading glasses if I could get my distance vision back. Or even just better. I’ll be experimenting with those lenses that darken with my next pair of glasses. Optician also recommended varifocals when the time comes but… bleh. I don’t wanna.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@mcelhearn @flargh I mean, when I say distance vision, the word ‘distance’ is doing heavy lifting these days. I basically wear my glasses 95% of the time. I sometimes take them off when reading and when in bed, but that’s about it.

@pete About right, although locally we do have issues with aggressive cyclists in very specific areas, and when I once mentioned that online I was in “mute responses” territory for weeks. So there is a small contingent of bonkers people out there. (The kind when you suggest cyclists be kinder to pedestrians responds by screaming “oh, you want me to get run over by an articulated lorry then?” who then proceeds to send you threatening tweets for days.)

If you finish up before you get to The Devil You Know, Humble’s BPRD bundle is an incredible amount of very good comics for about twenty quid.

https://www.humblebundle.com/books/mike-mignolas-bprd-dark-horse-books

Mind, I need to stop wondering once a year whether Devil You Know is as bad as I remember it because it always is.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@Bobbins That last volume is terrible. Mignola nearly saved it at the end but bleh. Mind you, the whole run gradually turned into the most miserable, turgid thing after the sheer magic and wonder of Hellboy. I still have all my books, because I know they’d be impossible to buy again if I sold them. But they’re right on the eBay line.
