Last year I tweeted something about how people on my team in the US, with the same job at the same level, made about twice the money, and it's not justified by "cost of living differences".
And I had all these people responding with "but you don't pay for health insurance" blah blah so here's my overview of my Dutch health insurance costs:

  • 150+/month for insurance (and it aint that fancy)
  • 385/yr deductible
  • many out of pocket costs, capped at 250/yr (which i hit in February)

@kevinteljeur it is mandatory here! And starts at around €138/month - but there's discounts based on income.
It does cover general doctors visits. I hit my cap bc my ADHD meds, but most "normal" costs are covered.

are always covered bc GPs are the gatekeepers to all other services covered by insurance - so if you want to, say, see a dermatologist, they won't allow you make an appt unless your GP refers you, and GPs can and often do refuse to refer you

there's TRULY nothing like pairing with a teammate I like to get me in the zone to code for hours
like even (especially) if it's pairing on something different than what i'm working on. Feeling connected to my coworkers and to what we're building together is what motivates me

You know, one thing about street harassment is -- sometimes i share stories if stuff that's happened to me in public and people are super shocked at how many I've experienced. And like yes, being a young black/mixed woman has a lot to do with it. But I'm pretty sure that it's also about me being a City Kid, living my whole life in dense 5+ million people cities, using primarily public transportation
Like just hours-wise I've spent wayyy more time walking in public than most lol

Dare I theorize that the algorithm is part of why Black Twitter ended up being such a good spot?

Like when you join the million white nerds on Mastodon, and you post, your post will be seen by who's online at the time (white nerds) and then be swallowed up by the mass.
It's difficult to talk about stuff that only other black people understand because like theres no "target audience" or filtering or much less of one

From a philosophical standpoint, i think the fact that social media combines immediacy and permanence makes it really hard to have a healthy image of a person, including for ourselves.
If youve said anything on social media in the past, it's an artifact that remains. And so if you change your mind, you still have to consider the past a part of you and your image. so the natural tendency is to do mental gymnastics so the two opinions can fit together. When they actually shouldnt!

I'm thinking not even of anything specific, but just:
For a long time, the longevity of things was more or less related to the time it took to craft them. Houses, books, clothes, furniture... If it's poorly built, or if there's no reason to conserve it, it'll probably disappear.
Now, anything digital is both immediate and much, much more persistent

There's a pineapple on pizza meme. You're on the Hawaiian pizza hate train, share it meme, and maybe have some banter in the comments.
Years later, you discover that pineapple on pizza can actually be delicious. Sweet, tangy garlicness whirling around in your mouth, you suddenly feel ashamed! You were wrong. How can you face your followers?

The answer is of course who the fuck cares? But you're made to feel like you have to.

Yo I'm so bad with time, in a way that I'm actually super unhappy about. I really wish I understood time better and wasn't fucking late to everything.
But to explain it it's like - it's just numbers in my head. If I need to be somewhere at 9:30, and it takes 15 min to get there, and that means I leave home around 9:05 to be safe...
All those are just numbers. And I have to keep track of those numbers and not get them mixed up, all the while every time i check the time there's a new number

@gdinwiddie i will try this!! I feel like it's true for me as well re: precision. If i only have to deal with 4 times per hour instead of 60 (or even 12), i am hopeful that things will make more sense.
