That moment when I build a tool, poke the people who manage the related system to get some feedback, and the next thing I know they're trying to get it added to the team presentation and THEM presenting it, while the product is still unfinished and I was just looking for comments 🫠
Seems like it was actually a communication issue on their end though

netbooks need a revival

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@sirlan_ff00ff what kind of netbooks? there's some really cool smol things out there right now, like the steam deck, or something like this if you want a keyboard https://www.amazon.nl/GPD-Pocket-N6000-1920x1200p-GPD-POCKET-3-N6000/dp/B09Q3KWFR6?th=1

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@sirlan_ff00ff I guess most of the cheap portable market is filled in by secondf hand laptops these days. I suppose there are still some brands that sell cheaper laptops but they're usually also just crappy quality plastic and cooling that barely holds together. I've been thinking of maybe designing something basic myself around a SOC, although there already are some laptops based upon a raspberry pi I believe

Pro tip: if you want to bring your noisy ass mechanical keyboard with cherry mx brown keys to work and have it being socially accepted, also bring your noisier ass mechanical keyboard with cherry mx blue keys, so that when you take the latter home people will be so relieved they're totally fine with your mx browns :drgn_sparkle:

(Sorry I brought my ducky mecha mini to work I'm trying to type as silently as possible but it feels so good compared to rubberdomes aa)

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@cinebox hah yea compared to the other cherry keys the browns are nice ans silent, but don't underestimate how silent rubberdomes are, it's literally made of rubber padding, unless you're jamming the keys, in which case mechanical will definitely alsp be very loud :D but if you have decent padding around your desk and office, normal typing on browns or hard typing on rubberdomes is pretty doable I suppose? I was in an office with tiles and open spacs once, could barely type at all😅

oh lol that was quick, took care of my IFTTT twitter crossposting workaround, bye then. I guess I need to stop being lazy and host my own moa relay for that or something, hngg why can't elon just gtfo, twitter used to be almost as open as mastodon.

why is it so easy to end up in a mood where you don't want to open any messengers or reply to anyone and it somehow feels like everyone would feel bothered by you and the ones poking you are just doing it for pity? But at the same time doomscrolling social media is fine?? Brain are you trying to get us killed

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

forces self to reply to everyone see that wasn't so bad was it?
still dying inside for no reason brain what are you even trying to do

Isn't it bizarre brains even do detrimental stuff like that? I've seen similar patterns in others and I always wondered, do our brains require the contrast, i.e to feel bad, in order to feel good sometimes? I suppose if we're always happy, we're never happy, so is this a natural thing to try and make the happy moments feel happier? I never quite understood it

Someone just knocked on your door, and you find them standing outside with a camera crew asking you to film inside your house/room/apartment.

How f*cked are you? Will you let them in?

@pug50 oh wow that's amazing! Awesome suit! And honestly it still looks tidier than my place right now, don't worry haha. Awesome that you got on the bbc!

slowly but surely actually cobbling together a working multi node filesystem, just a bit different than my initial design concept;

  1. Each node runs one or more very basic access APIs in a NodeJS script on one or more storage folders. Data and metadata can be separated (metadata is just text files haha)

  2. a daemon mirrors local APIs to remote APIs with n copies per subfolder automatically.

  3. a fuse client uses the API as backend to provide a normal storage frontend.

I wonder if one of those swimming pool heatpumps could be used indoor to give off heat to the cooling loop I have going outside .. like I wonder if those things also have heating elements, if not they should just work as indoor AC with a water outlet right? and if they do maybe the heating element can be disabled 🤔

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@VickForcella sure if heating was the goal that'd be an option, for the summer it'll be for cooling though, that's why the evap cooling thingy outside, my full scale idea would be to have a set of pumps and digital valves that'd try most efficiently manage the buffer loop temperature, and then individual rooms could dump either heat or cold into the loop depending on the specific room's needs, that'd allow for reusing the temperature gradient as well as making it easier to cool/heat

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@VickForcella have been considering that honestly! but would first have to prove this outdoor system works .. And also might have to put a heat exchanger between the open air loop and the closed oxidating metal facing loop, hehe

I wonder, how does everyone else make/eat their mac n cheese?

Mine is just: make macaroni, add gouda cheese and ham blocks, mix while hot, serve with some ketchup, but I bet a lot of people out there have their own secret recipe

A red rice cooker with macaroni, a lot of cheese, and ham blocks. There's a fork on the right.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@cinebox page is a 404 unfortunately, but if it's this one https://foodnetwork.co.uk/recipes/baked-macaroni-and-cheese that looks really nice and crunchy, interesting take on it definitely o: should try that some day

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@baralheia hee, I appreciate the long reply honestly! I'll take note of this for the next time I'm gonna make mac n cheese- I do agree, a bit of mincemeat or some extra spices can make a big difference on the recipe!

I also need to try that Velveeta cheese! I wonder how it compares to the dutch gouda-style "jonge kaas" that you can get in every grocery store, it's basically like very very young cheddar, only ripened for 4 weeks rather than the usual 2-3+ months. the soft cheese you see is that.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@LightTheUnicorn breadcrumbs sounds like an interesting addition! Maybe I should try that some time

What's the absolute most simple way of composing a reasonable webpage? I'd like something basic to show off maybe a dozen of my photos; doesn't need to be anything more than thumbnails leading to a page for each, preferably without any JS involved.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@porsupah probably jekyll if it needs updates sometimes, if it's just a one off thing you could consider grabbing some html/css framework like bootstrap (though that was like a decade ago, seems like there's better alternative these days https://hackr.io/blog/top-bootstrap-alternatives )

I'm wondering, how many of you have already made the jump to linux? And do you game on it too?

Has it been an improvement for you too?
I've been using basically exclusively linux ever since 2012 ish, it was rough back then, but even rougher back in 2005 ish when I started, and nowadays I feel like it's basically beating windows in almost every way except some specific proprietary software, often due to DRM giving windows a sort of console-esque feel to me, but maybe I'm wrong and people like it

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@vertigo nice! those were the real hacker days heh, things have changed quite a lot since then, what kind of distro and such do you run these days? .. .. and what's your opinion on systemd? :P

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@nspace oh neat, I also used to run arch basically everywhere, it's definitely a very flexible and customizable OS that feels very homey when you get used to it!

You also use arch on servers? isn't that a pain with updates? Also what about SELinux and such, or do you use AppArmor? and what about reproducible builds and all that? didn't think Arch really compiled and configured for security by default, then again I suppose you can get really far with custom configs and all that stuff :o

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@nspace nice! That's good to hear honestly, I always liked arch and how easy it was to reproduce images from scratch if needed, maybe I'll give it another swing some day with LTS kernel on my laptop.

What kinda AppArmor configs do you use (if any)? I'm more used to SELinux myself so I never quite got how to set up AppArmor properly heh
