This is basically superior to Pleroma already.

the core downfall of mastodon is that every instance is an opportunity to censor potentially thousands of individuals on the grounds of vague reasons such as “in appropriate content”

their entire architecture is based around the idea that a single instance admin has the power to decide what its users are allowed to see, and you can’t easily move to another relay without rebuilding your social graph.

why people still use this protocol is mind boggling to me.

let users control their own feed ffs. Individuals and clients should have this power, not relay tinpot dictators.

@32e1827635450ebb3c5a7d12c1f8e7@mostr.pub @fedi_block_bot As the creator of Mastodon, I completely agree with you.

@realcaseyrollins @fedi_block_bot @32e1827635450ebb3c5a7d12c1f8e7@mostr.pub False equivalence. Getting blocked from a Fedi instance deletes your entire identity online. Getting blocked from a Nostr relay has basically no effect.

@realcaseyrollins @fedi_block_bot @32e1827635450ebb3c5a7d12c1f8e7@mostr.pub No. You generate a private and post wherever you want.

@mage @fedi_block_bot @32e1827635450ebb3c5a7d12c1f8e7@mostr.pub @realcaseyrollins Not really a problem. Just add another relay.

@alex I want to make a userscript like "Dissenter" that uses Nostr as its substrate. I checked the NIPs to see if there was any event type that was suitable for this but didn't find a perfect match. Would it be acceptable to create a new Event type for "comment on URI" that is just an additional field on short text events, or just like ram the URI into a tag field and use as-is?

alex,
@alex@gleasonator.com avatar

@sun Someone actually built that already. But I can't remember the name. Maybe @Sprate remembers.

It just used kind 1 events, actually, with an "r" tag of the URL.

There is actually another extension that predates it, though. @3bf0c63fcb93463407af97a5e5ee64@mostr.pub did it: https://github.com/fiatjaf/wen And he invented a new kind 34 event for this one.

Pleroma does something very brave to deal with race conditions. They simply don't care.

alex,
@alex@gleasonator.com avatar

@feld It's not really a problem. More of a trade-off. I'm considering copying Pleroma's way of not caring. It's about emoji react counts. To update the count, we SELECT the object, modify, then UPDATE. But if two processes SELECT at the same time, the later one will overwrite the prior one. The solution is to lock it, or something? Doesn't seem worth the added complexity. Or use Redis, which actually supports Sets, which really doesn't seem worth it. So what it's doing is actually fine. Unlike when Pleroma got Webfingered yesterday. 😂

Had a dream I ate a piece of steak at a venue. I literally couldn't stop myself. Then I saw the entire carcass fit on my plate. Then some guy got up and started shouting, "it's veal! these are baby cows! This is highly unethical!" And I started shouting back, "what is the difference between a baby cow and an adult cow?! Huh?! Huh?!"

@KnifeEar One of my first seeds of veganism was when I was eating a hamburger, and I was looking at my own arm (I had just done marijuana). And as I was chewing the hamburger I was thinking about how it was made of the same "stuff" as my very own flesh. And, you just can't come back from that man.
