It’s not exactly a surprise that the kind of people who make spyware to target journalists and civil rights activists also try abuse the court system:

Dear Technical and Internet Gurus:

Is Google Analytics accurate?

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield what metric are you concerned with accuracy on? All tools of that class have limits: they don’t capture people with ad blockers or JavaScript disabled, it’s not easy to filter out bots, and the data volume can lead to things like sampling a subset of total traffic or using calculations like averages which can mislead.

GA isn’t worse than the other services, but I’d be careful not to treat any of them as absolute or to expect close matches comparing across different services.

“I looked through the top 20 results for each, as well as whatever knowledge boxes and AI word salads they organically gave me. That’s 2 pages of results on Google, for reference.

All of them failed to produce a fully correct answer. Most had a single partially correct answer somewhere in the first 20 results, but never near the top or showcased. DDG did best, with the partially correct answer at number 4. Google did the worst, no correct answer at all.”

Ahead of WWDC, I migrated all my personal passwords (~500 items) from 1Password to iCloud Keychain. I finally did it.

...and it's been mostly flawless? And I don't have weird autofill errors in Safari anymore? And this thing actually works?

I hope Apple announces a Password app on Monday, with support for secure attachments too. I'm ready.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@viticci @caseyliss I had a similar experience - I bought every version of 1P from 2009 on but the nags to switch to the subscription version got old, I imported them to iCloud Keychain, and over the last year the only thing I’ve missed was a single secure note. It’s really not a hard transition.

This is interesting research into how people react to meat reduction as a #ClimateChange mitigation strategy. We’re going to need to find better education strategies here and quickly…

This needs to be broken down by which Agile. Was it the waterfall process with no requirements gathering, the scrum and methodology instead of code method, or the actually putting something that runs in front of stakeholders and iterating?

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@enobacon yeah, I noped out of that as soon as I saw it was a marketing campaign. Consultants like that are how we got people doing Agilefall and SAFe, and then saying Agile didn’t work.

The more I think about this whole Windows Recall thing the more I suspect Microsoft has utterly tanked their sales prospects in business for a decade. This isn’t just a “we have added a feature that you may not like and can turn off” but rather “we have pre-installed a comprehensive keylogger and screen recorder which you can’t remove and is one registry flip away from being enabled”

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@wordshaper I’m wondering how many of their government and regulated business customers are putting privacy/security language into their procurement contracts & getting ready to call their bluff. Switching to Linux, Mac, or ChromeOS has never been easier this many decades into the web and maintenance has been slowly chipping away at legacy internal desktop apps or pushing them into virtualization.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@wordshaper Yes, whatever process lead to this getting so close to shipping without a grownup in the room is what would worry me most.

Some of y'all are still confused as to why it seems that Silicon Valley billionaires are "turning to Trump." That's because you don't listen to Black people, you disrespect poor white people, and you ignore obvious statistics that have been staring you in the face for decades.

Silicon. Valley. Billionaires. Have. Always. Supported. Trump.

Not because they like the tax breaks. Because they are more likely to be racist, and racism is the greatest predictor of Trump support.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@mekkaokereke there's an interesting contrast with the “AI will destroy jobs” debate where suddenly a bunch of mostly white dudes who thought they were too smart to need unions are realizing that the solidarity they felt with their CEOs was not reciprocal.

@nikkid definitely not the only one! I’m curious whether some reporter will get her to comment.

I was also wondering whether the trip was going so poorly that he bought the Cybertruck thinking that it’d impress new dates, which is apparently a thing these guys believe happens.

I have this older guy following me around at the park. Completely uninvited, he changes his walking direction to follow me around and slows me down and keeps me from my pace and podcasts. I have no interest to talking to him about himself for an hour.

Due to the layout of the park I cannot always avoid him. Today I told him directly I was late for work and couldn't talk. I picked up my pace and he CHASED ME. I'm so tired of this and would like to avoid changing my walking time. What the hell?

@hakamadare @peter @adriano A ton of people did get better jobs because their open source projects got them past first round screening or developed a social network they didn’t have because they weren’t part of the Berkeley/MIT/Stanford community. Better than the unpaid exposure exploitation but feels a lot like a postdoc doing useful work for industry where most of the money isn’t made by the author.

2 weeks after BSidesSF/RSA & I still don’t have my voice back. Tell me all your voice recovery tips! So far I’ve tried:

  • hydration (esp throat coat tea)
  • humidifier
  • cough drops without menthol (Luden’s)
  • 48 hours of near-total vocal rest
  • ibuprofen
  • gargling salt water

Anything I missed?
