UPDATE: Finished the book and would highly recommend this fascinating history of Psychedelics in America. So many parallels to today...this NYT review sums it up better than I can if you want to know more.
@mrcompletely Nice! It's fascinating what a run psychs had before Leary/Lilly/Counterculture came along....and the whole dark side of the Govt. funding/testing of course.
I mean, I don’t dislike it as a vessel for butter and/or sugar/spice. But I certainly wouldn’t miss it if it was gone. So much shit to pick out of your teeth. Always the potential for a tooth-cracking unpopped kernel.
Popcorn has earned more of our love than it deserves.
Until high school, Kate Feiffer believed that her mother Judy's novel, "A Hot Property," was about real estate. Then a boyfriend plucked the book from the shelves, started reading passages aloud, and revealed it was a piece of 1970s erotica. From then until just a few years ago, Kate considered "A Hot Property" to be her literary Waterloo — the book she'd hoped to conquer but never been able to. But after her mother's death, she picked up the novel and — between bouts of screaming and cringing — found something more thoughtful and reflective than she was expecting. Here's what she wrote for LitHub.
I'm itch'n to hang at this recently renovated historic San Diego gem. Stunning! Staycation!! Check it out 😍
PS. A Turkish bath–inspired spa is scheduled to open in mid-2024.
"The newly reimagined Lafayette Hotel in San Diego has chic '40s energy, gorgeous restaurants and bars with amazing food, and a pool."
I got to enjoy the renovations at the historic Lafayette Hotel yesterday! WOW!! (OG post below for context). A $20 Day Pass for the pool/grounds was a purrfect way to soak it all in w/out breaking the bank. I love Art Deco design and was in awe of the gorgeous details. I'm looking forward to hanging in The Jungle Room where they have live jazz every night. So hip and fun! Hard to believe this oasis is in the middle of a city neighborhood.
Fun read before diving into the work week! I've seen an explosion of great Domestic and International travel + adventure content on the Don lately. I'll do a Follow FriYay post of my favorites this week 😻
Palm Royale on Apple: watch it! Incredible cast-too many greats to list. Kristen Wiig is lead, many other famous actors and several you will recognize, look up on IMDB and go, “Yes, that is____!” Example: Hurley’s mom from Lost. Campy, funny, great set design and costumes (very Mad Men era), feminist tropes that resonate loudly today, but entertaining w/o going that deep if you don’t want to.
