Ok, I’m going to make a thread of queer holiday events in San Francisco. I’ll update this list from time to time.

[Update]: 28 events so far.

I might have posted a photo of it before, but I love this Castro mural by Serge Gay Jr. of these four queer African American women who are iconic here in San Francisco and the Castro: Pat Norman, Honey Mahogany, Gwenn Craig and Ms. Billie Cooper.

I was really happy with my look tho.

I’m not usually one for fomo, but I’m really really bummed that I didn’t get to enjoy Pride yesterday.

I am glad that I wasn’t hurt and getting a new phone was mostly painless and I think I was able to get everything restored from all the backups.

Holiday movie status:

• Single All the Way on Netflix (2021), rewatch. Still holds up, thanks to an absolutely stacked supporting cast. One of the top queer holiday movies.

• Everything Christmas on Hallmark (2023). Watched about 45 minutes of this, which was so incredibly generic that it went full circle back into being somewhat watchable. In the meet-cute, the two leads both bend down to pick up something they dropped and bonk heads in a way that was actually funny. They worked really hard to sell this terrible script.

Over the years I’ve acquired a lot of the Walker colored zipper pouches that I use to store and organize my gear. It’s really handy for travel.

Nowadays, I keep all my lightning cables in purple pouches, my USB-C cables in gold pouches, and my Apple Watch charging cables in light blue pouches. I also use other ones for my AirPods, my phone battery, my Clipper card, and my keys.

(Inspired by @brennansv sharing how he uses colored duct tape to organize his cables.)

A round travel bag holds several variety of colored mesh zippered pouches, most of which have tech gear of some sort inside.
Six colored pouches, each with a phone charger inside a matching colored plastic fish-shaped case and a length of usb cable coiled with a matching colored Velcro tie. The six colors are in rainbow order: red, orange, green, light blue, dark blue and purple.

That was fun — I decided to post a pic to Threads. I got 30 likes, which is great! Four of them are mutuals who I know, and one seems to be a real person. The other 25 are all spam.

Well, this is intriguing — an online book club, powered by ActivityPub, moderated by the same great team that moderates this instance, with the capability of importing your current StoryGraph or Goodreads book ratings, and with more social features.

I’ve signed up as plinytheolder if anyone else wants to try it out.

The tourist trap store in the Castro just got a bunch of witchy merch in time for October. 🎃🧙‍♀️

Queer men of my generation grew up seeing, almost without exception, only one type of queer male body in our media: young, skinny/fit, emphasis on the abs, usually white.

Anyway, Troye Sivan has a new video out.

Whenever people post articles about parents being confused about Gen Z slang, I remember how confusing I used to find thirst — is the person posting thirsty, or are they making the viewer thirsty? and what about thirst traps? — and then I close my little iPad and take a break.

Yes, I’ll take a picture in front of the Leonard Matlovich memorial, but only if it matches my outfit.

While we were sitting in Harvey Milk Plaza, a woman came up and asked all of us if we would sign to get something on the ballot. I just said no. Gwenn Craig, in the black outfit with the purple scarf, and Tina actually engaged with her. Tina read the initiative and said they wouldn’t sign it.

The woman started to argue, so Gwenn asked who was behind the initiative. It turns out it was TogetherSF, an organization funded by billionaires who are trying to remake SF. Gwenn got into it with the lady, who wouldn’t give up.

Eventually, the woman said “Have you heard of Pat Norman?” All of us looked up, and Gwenn said “I worked with Pat Norman”. The woman said “Pat Norman was my mother” and then walked away. Tina walked after her to give her a tote bag — Tina commissioned a big mural in the Castro featuring four Black queer women, including Gwenn and Pat Norman, and the image is on the tote.

The woman argued with Tina, and did not want to take the bag, but eventually took it without looking at it.

A new bar/restaurant at 18th and Castro will be called Pink Swallow.

This sent me though: “It’s a play on words with multiple meanings that people of all communities, ages, and backgrounds can enjoy.”

The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District is looking for the names of iconic SF lesbians and bisexual women to put on their next mural. Names so far include Del Martin & Phyllis Lyon, Jewelle Gomez, Angela Davis, Margaret Cho and Marga Gomez.

I added activist Olga Talamante, artists Ester Hernandez and Lenore Chinn, singer & drag king Leigh Crow, and drag royalty Miss Shugana and Madd-Dogg 20/20.

Who comes to mind when you think of iconic San Francisco lesbians and bisexual women?

Say you’re from the Bay Area without saying you’re from the Bay Area:

I went right to mastodon instead of twitter after the tremor yesterday.

The Holiday Gaiety at the SF Symphony with Peaches Christ, Edwin Outwater, Bianca Del Rio, & the SF Gay Men’s Chorus was a lot of fun. Great audience, very queer, leave your kids at home, very San Francisco. Also, Edwin is a snack.

So far this morning I have:

• solved a crossword in a new app
• added to a list of deceased major queer celebs, mostly from the last 100 years or so, who seemed important to me in some way
• did a wikipedia deep dive on the release dates of Rick James and Prince albums in the early 80s, to get a sense of their rivalry — in particular, of how insanely jealous Prince was of Rick James’s success
• marveled at Rick James’s red boots on the cover of Street Songs
• realized that Janet Jackson was only 19 when Control was released and how she, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis single-handedly created New Jack Swing and ALSO made every industrial band furiously figure out how to duplicate the drum machines
• read the oscar noms and got bummed on behalf of actors and directors that I will likely never meet
• made coffee
