Hmm, after having run on my for a bit I noticed I really don't need it. (Because the video chat just doesnt work as it should).
Maybe I'll just reset the rpi again and focus on some leaner system.

Maybe I'll try with this time. Have to check if that has good voice and screenshare options right now. And maybe a web interface.

I haven't really done anything with that for a decade.

Menel,
@Menel@nerdculture.de avatar

@kyonshi
The current open standard clients don't have screenshare as far as I know.
It's great for whatsapp /signal like chats and groups. Video /voice no problem, but screenshare... maybe a module for conversejs.
Otherwise there is jitsi-meet with that ability.

I'm using #CalyxyOS on my phone, using #microg as location service.
Now hearing that #mozilla will shut down its location provider, I checked my settings and noticed I can't choose the installed location backends like https://f-droid.org/packages/helium314.localbackend/ anymore. Only a swipe for Mozilla and one for local storage.
Is this local backend now integrated, and is this change by #calyx or microg, that I can't choose more backends anymore?

Can i use my homeserver as server? Or do i have to spin up separate xmpp server and then use puppet bridge?

Menel,
@Menel@nerdculture.de avatar

@aks
A matrix homeserver can't speak xmpp. You need a separate xmpp server.
are popular choices.

As long as you only want a bridge, I think you don't need an xmpp server tho bifrost can speak xmpp (I think)

I wish that (and ) were better designed.

It has become among the most popular open messaging protocols, but it remains a scalability nightmare.

It's literally the Blockchain of messaging. Its current state is given by the sum of the whole chain of events received since t=0. It's a brittle append-only ledger, and any modifications you do to it are very likely to break it.

Do you have a huge 100GB database and you want to clean up old stuff? Sorry, you can't. There are some non-official solutions for compacting the events, but they're all likely to break your db - and none worked so far in my case.

Do you have users on your instance that entered a busy room on matrix.org? Then you'll get all the join/leave events of that busy room on your db, with no way of deleting them, and nothing to do unless your users exit those rooms.

Did you start your instance by toying with the default SQLite backend, and now that it's become big you want to move to Postgres? Sorry, no official guides provided, only unofficial procedures scattered across a bunch of blogs.

Do you want to change the name of your server? Sorry, you can't. All the events are tightly coupled to your server name. The advised solution is to simply start a new instance.

Such a rigid and brittle implementation shouldn't have become an open de facto standard without much questioning about its poor design decisions.

At the very least, some official tools must be provided to enable admins to compact events. If the size of the database is guaranteed to increase indefinitely, then entry barriers against self-hosting are only going to increase.

I don't see many implementations of matrix. There are more server and clients for xmpp then matrix, there is basically only one stable server for matrix, by the company that made the protocol... And matrix can't still claim its just because it is so new... The years flew past.
Now you have the same situation as with every federated protocol, it has to slow down, or you can't have independent, working implementations, or move fast and be just the protocol of one company.

Meanwhile xmpp wasn't as fast to jump on mobile, but some years later it had new xeps, for mobile, and new clients. And I'm sure, if a micro fraction of the money that was dumped on matrix had found its way to xmpp, that could have been even faster.
Also I doubt matrix bering bigger, it may have more public rooms hosted. Total server and user count is doubtful.
Most of the feeling of matrix beein big is PR money and projects hosting rooms at matrix.org

    I wanted to setup secure group messaging solution (+calls and video calls) between members of my family but this turned out to be non trivial because so many "good" solutions these days expect a smartphone and (valid) phone number. However… my youngest does not have a smartphone.

    After a few dead ends I managed to setup Signal for them anyway, despite this.

    Really though, it should not be this hard! Why are all these services tied to phones and phone numbers anyway!?

    Menel,
    @Menel@nerdculture.de avatar

    @ruari
    It is the same security as signal has.
    The omemo protocol of xmpp is inspired by the signal protocol, it is basically the same, but includes the ability for more then one device per account.
    See https://snikket.org for a family xmpp setup.
    It comes with a magic user invite system, which your family members have less steps then with even signal to your setup (they only have to choose a username.)

    There is also a company called Beeper that tries to sell you access to Matrix bridges/gateways for $15/month. Maybe @nicoco (Slidge¹ developer) needs to go talk to some VCs.

    Biboumi is the best bridging service I've ever seen. It's also the only way I use irc.
    Especially how it maps and how it deals with the shortcomings from either protocol to each other is very nice and thoughtful.
    I guess native is always the best for some people. Especially if you're used to it. But using biboumi you already have your bouncer too and I don't have to switch apps to access irc rooms.

    And so, as part of my exercises, I've now hosted my own server node. is now running at https://kchat.port0.org/

    (sorry, no open registrations)

    Super easy to do, especially with , and now i've got one more service under my bag :)

    I wonder what I should host next? IRCd? I2P website?

    Hosting is fun again!

    That one is gone. It was old advice even some years ago and not maintainable. And a new one isn't ready yet.
    The best think for that currently is testssl.sh with the '-t xmpp' option.
