I see people telling us that we shouldn’t be negative about Bluesky, that we should give it a chance and see what happens. But how else are we supposed to judge the trustworthiness of a new system than by our past experiences with the people involved? And frankly, the Twitter experience was absolutely miserable. I simply don’t trust Jack Dorsey or anyone who works with him, with good reason.

This, via @davidgerard, is a #bluesky gobsmacker.

First there's the breathtaking confidence that this this exciting AI thing will solve the problem. As if Twitter didn't have literally hundreds of ML engineers working on this for years. YEARS.

Then there's the notion that you could possibly create AI magic without doing enough of the manual work to really understand it. Nope!

Third, there's apparently a belief that a magic technical solution exists to social problems that are so complex that they're demoralizing and hard to deal with.

Fourth, I see no recognition that they should have had at least some starter solutions before letting users on at all.

Lastly, there's the lack of recognition that anti-abuse work, hard though it is, is not nearly as hard as dealing with the abuse.

@williampietri @davidgerard It just amazes me how completely out of touch these overwhelmingly white tech libertarian billionaires are. Pig-headed insistence on automatic technical solutions to abuse and extremism, after years of seeing them fail in spectacular ways.

Now it’s AI that’s gonna save them from dealing directly with the unwashed masses.

The thing about decentralized services: at any given moment, they may not all support everything in the protocol. There’s no central overseer. Some of them are going to fuck up from time to time and their services will be unreliable. Fault tolerance needs to be built into any decentralized protocol.
