@munroe here's a curveball question for ya.

Are there any films which aren't considered to be vampire / supernatural adjacent which you would argue absolutely fit the criteria?

I consider Dangerous Liaisons (1988): Directed by Stephen Frears Starring - a host of people but including - Glenn Close, John Malkovich, and Michelle Pfeiffer is TOTALLY a film about a bunch of vampires who feed on emotions.

@munroe @humanadverb also there is a comic / graphic novel series called Phonogram where Phonomancers can feed off peoples reaction to music - they can also influence people through that music /crowd magic .

Written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Jamie McKelvie. It is published by American company Image Comics.

I.
LOVED.
Lost Girl

I have entire thing on dvd and should really do a rewatch. There's a show that knew how to do consistent world-building!

And yes, on reflection - most of the creatures involved either ate or fed off humans in some way.

@munroe The film In Time, great concept - poorly executed - also Timberlake just can't act.

But yes I see what you mean. Elites, immortal, gain time essentially by leaching off the poor - great vampire parallels !

@munroe all Dark Fey fed off HUmans - or other fey, not all Light ones.

The Dark /Light split was about eh only major problem i had with that show .. but even then within the show they explored why that social setup was .. less than ideal.

So vampire TV reccs in no particular order

The Originals: What if Shakespeare got smushed together with a Soap Opera and there were dynasties of Vamps, Werewolves and Witches ?

Blood Ties: Very Myopic ex cop/ Private Eye has Vamp Partner (who's also a famous historical character). Has a love Triangle

Ultraviolet: UK TV show. Slow burn tension lots of intense acting. With a young Idris Elba

Being Human UK: A Ghost a vampire & a werewolf end up flat sharing. Funny but not a sitcom

:)

@gluesticks looking back now, the talent stack in the show Ultraviolet was ridiculous..

@munroe The originals is very.. High gloss. It's a vibe shared with lots of other (originally aired on CW Network) shows: Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, The Flash, Smallville - I can totally understand some people bouncing off of that.

For me the Originals leaned into the melodrama but very much acknowledged the type of Genre show it was without being all wink wink meta about it.

Warring siblings dynamics combined with having to co-exist for centuries together - appeals to me

@munroe I have had the strain recommended to me before, unfortunately I'm not into Del Torro's horror aesthetics.

Blade 2's VFX was to 'sticky' for me.

I know it's contradictory but as much as I love Vampire media, I'm not very much into the visceral / physical horror aspects

@munroe There's a 2009 film called Daybreakers - Ethan Hawke and Sam Neil are two of the main cast - and it explored just that Vampire Elite and Vampires as Monsters - I can't articulate why but the Daybreakers monster vfx did not squick me out like the Blade 2 'mutli petaled mouths' did.

@munroe I enjoyed Blade 2 - but felt it fell into the Rule of Cool over Narrative sense, a lot more than the first film did.

@munroe I was an intense Supernatural fan right up until a certain Female character was Fridged just to give Dean something to do.

Also the dynamic brother duo (plus later additional Angel) became untouchable so the stories seemed predictable and boring.

Death meant literally nothing to the main cast

@munroe Did you know what The Original Showrunner intended for Supernatural to end after 5 seasons? And it was supposed to finish with Sam stuck in hell?

Anyway whatever season it was when Charlie (Felicia Day) came back from Oz and then got killed so Dean had a reason to pick up the Cain jawbone was when I finally soured on the entire thing. I know how it ended but meh.
