I know it’s Tuesday but did anyone get up to anything exciting over the weekend?

I did the Harcourt Park to Poet’s Park Upper Hutt loop with my eldest as part of Bike the Trail on Sunday. It’s the furtherest any of my kids have biked (about 12km return) and TBH possibly the furthest I’ve biked. I deliberately took the most capable so it didn’t feel like a long trip in the end.

The normal Bike the Trail goes from Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt to the Riverbank Carpark in Lower Hutt, about 21km, but they do a shorter loop track for people like me taking kids.

Edit: autocorrect keeps changing Upper Hutt to Upper Hurt 😆

Oh boy, my bike repair plan is to not ride further from home/car than I can carry the bike back. I really should learn some basic maintenance and repair.

I wouldn’t know where to start! Buying a work stand feels like assuming I’m gonna keep doing it instead of giving up the first time I try 😆

That’s awesome! My kids love going to places and doing drawing/art despite all the art stuff we have at home. I guess it’s not the same.

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Yeah that makes sense. Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out and see if I can’t work out some basic maintenance.

Oh wow, that’s cool! My kids would love doing some pottery.

I would normally quote the Boots Theory, but $150-250 for good quality sandals still seems like too much.

No, electric vehicle sales aren’t dropping. Here’s what’s really going on (www.cnn.com)

Tesla has been slashing prices. Ford just cut the price of its Mustang Mach-E, too, plus it cut back production of its electric pickup. And General Motors is thinking about bringing back plug-in hybrids, possibly taking a step back from GM’s earlier commitment to shifting straight to pure EVs....

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Wouldn’t the slashing prices mean a short term increase in sales? I don’t see how that proves sales aren’t dropping long term (or that they didn’t drop before the sales).

28 minute Bluey is basically a Bluey movie!

So I may be reading too far into this, but does this machine check your age and ethnicity to work out how much you might be willing to pay for M&Ms then charge you that much?

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

It mentioned targeted discounts based on demographic, which sounds to be like pricing things based on demographic.

If the data is local and stays on the machine, I’m guessing they mean the face data. They are probably sending the data about what demographics buy what things at what price point to feed to other machines.

Any car people here?

So, I’ve got a 2015 Ford Kuga, and it’s electronics are going haywire. Errors about Hill start not available, City Stop Assist not available, front camera not available (I’m not sure it has one?), AWD overheating (when car only just turned on), and so on. These all came on all of a sudden.

Is there anything that a not-car person like myself can do to troubleshoot? Or at least work out whether this is a software issue needing to be solved by a Ford dealer, or I can just take it to any old mechanic?

Dave,

Haha we ended up with the car through a Great Family Car Swap, swapping two other cars to get one that could fit three of our existing car seats side by side.

I guess if wiring is the issue, an auto electrician might be able to sort it without needing to go to the Ford dealer (we had it serviced at Ford one time, one time, because it was impressed on us that it was important to get the software updates. But the bill made me rethink how important software updates are).

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I was under the impression only the authorised Ford people would have access to software updates if that was the issue. I’ll check in the the local auto electrician to see if they think they can sort it.

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Yeah I’ll give this a go and see if it helps, but I don’t like the chances 😆

I think it’s not the link to the website, but the link on the new website to the research. It links to a PDF but shows “Not found”.

While not exactly the same, BlueSky (a twitter spinoff that has recently started federating, but not with ActivityPub so only federating with other BlueSky instances) has customizable feeds, so you pick the algorithm that suits you (or I assume make your own).

Microblogging isn’t my thing so I don’t know much about it, I just read the BlueSky (regular sized) blog post linked on Lemmy the other day.

We have many small cities with nothing between them, very little intercity rail services, and an easy source of cheap second hand cars. I’m surprised we are first but I would have put money on top 10.

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Weird, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them. But this says they can grow in most areas of NZ, so it doesn’t seem like a problem with range. It also says you can roast and grind the seeds and use them like coffee!

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Ah, well I’m back to thinking it’s a range thing. They probably can grow all over the country, but perhaps they spread themselves in the warmer parts of the country so you’re far more likely to see them than in areas they have trouble spreading.

Ooh, it came in a glass at a restaurant but maybe it was something like this? I can’t find ingredients but it seems to be apple juice with banana puree in it. I guess that would give you a thin drink not like a smoothie, but would be sweet and bananary?

Honestly it feels like two lifetimes ago so I’m not sure that I’d be able to know if it was the same even if I tried it today, I just remember it was sweet, bananary, thin not thick and creamy like a smoothie, and that I ordered a second one because I liked it so much. It seems to make sense that it might come out of a can. It wasn’t further explained, so I guess it’s a bit like ordering a coke.

I once had some sort of canned plant flavoured drink. Pretty sure that was in Indonesia too, we went through a local supermarket and bought a bunch of stuff we’d never seen before (mostly junk food).

Anyway, I can’t really recommend canned plant drink. It tasted too healthy, and had some slimy stuff in the bottom.
