Today we celebrate Vappupäivä in Finland and this Monday is a national holiday for us in part of the Walpurgis Night tradition where working people come together to celebrate in carneval like gatherings.
It's common to have balloons, different kinds of Finnish pastries and picnic although the weather is usually really cold this time a year in the north, yet I consider these times the last cold ones before the summer that is right around the corner.
We often stop and listen to male choir who sing both drinking songs and national, traditional songs in the parks. Finlandia hymn is often sang, it's a classic from Jean Sibelius, one of the most famous Finnish composer of the late Romantic and early-modern periods.
If you don't know, we have a long history with our Eastern neighbor #Russia, but last war was 83 years ago and we prevailed. The part in the Finlandia hymn when they sing "Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest, that thou hast thrown off thy slavery, beneath oppression's yoke thou never liest." - gets me every time :finland: 😭
Vappu on varsin merkityksetön juhla, kun ei ole siman, alkoholin tai munkkien ystävä. Muistan ajat, kun sitä juhli puhtaasti humalan takia. Pää täyteen viinaa ja kirkkopuistoon rymyämään. Sitä se varmaan monelle on nykyäänkin. Itse nautin pitkästä viikonlopusta ilman krapulaa. Hyvää vappua! #Vappu#VabuEiLobu
Kun ei käytä alkoholia ja on muutenkin tylsä, #vappu on ihan tyhjä juhla. Lapsena saatiin vappunaamarit. Se valinta oli vaikea. Muovinen kasvosuojus kasteli koko naaman ja erilaiset siitä irronneet myrkyt kirvelivät kurkussa -- mikäköhän niissä naamareissa niin viehätti lasta. Vappuhuiskut ja serpentiini kuuluivat varusteisiin, joskus vappupallokin (sellainen pyöreä)
