The employees of the Helsinki-based public utility Stara marched out of their workplaces on Thursday 12 October. The march will last for an hour and will take place at the end of the shifts. In practice, the marches start between 13.30 and 14.30. It is clear that this is a totally unsustainable development in a country where public spending is increasing due to an ageing population and where huge investments are needed for ecological reconstruction. The collapse of the revenue side is a key reason for the size of Finland's fiscal deficit. The government's ideological decision not to use the tools to strengthen the revenue side is the reason why the deficit is not falling despite the government's drastic cuts.
The tax rate will fall by 2.9 percentage points between 2022 and 2027. If the tax rate in 2027 were at the 2022 level, tax revenues would be almost EUR 10 billion higher and public finances would be more or less in balance. In other words, there is no need to raise the tax rate from where it was last year, when employment was at its best level in three decades. The necessary tax reforms would not have to target workers or low-income entrepreneurs. For example, bringing tax-free dividends from foreign funds within the tax net would raise additional revenue and increase the fairness and clarity of the tax system.

Yes, the right is going to change Finland's direction, but not in the way it claims. "The 'debt ship' continues to chug along as the government borrows even more than the previous government. And it is not because Finland is currently in any of the crises of the previous government. Finland is heading towards deeper inequality, towards the deterioration of the welfare state, towards increasing misery and poor families with children. There is no point in shouting 'poor people, get to work'. The bourgeoisie, including Petteri Orpo, know this. It is a bluff. It suggests that the bourgeoisie cares whether the poor can afford food and rent. In reality, the bourgeois know that there are not jobs for everyone and that not all jobs pay enough to live on. The bourgeois also knows that the economic outlook is currently poor. There is no sign of more jobs being created - quite the opposite.
So our Prime Minister, stop lying and say it straight. You think the child of the unemployed deserves to go hungry while you, as a well-off person, enjoy your tax cuts. You think students should either have rich parents to pay for their studies or they should burn themselves out and go into debt. You don't care if the unemployed get a job, and if they don't, you don't care if they can no longer afford it or have a chance of survival. Left Alliance leader Li Anderson rejects Finance Minister Riikka Purra's (BF.) proposal to increase VAT on food. Purra hinted at tightening VAT on food in an interview with Talouselämä magazine on Monday. "Purra's proposal to impose a VAT on foodstuffs would impoverish the lowest income earners, whose income is largely spent on food and groceries, the most," Anderson said. "The people and families most affected by the rising cost of living would now be made to pay for the government's reckless economic policies that favour the rich and big business."
Income distribution for the rich. Andersson points out that VAT is the most regressive tax, which means that low-income earners pay relatively more than high-income earners. The tax is the same for everyone, regardless of income. "The Finns' election rhetoric on how to bring the cost of living of Finns under control has been thrown in the bin once and for all. The policy of austerity is not about national debt, which the government continues to accelerate, but about income distribution in favour of the rich," Andersson says. "Employer contributions will be cut by up to €700 million and ministers will be taxed €2,000 a year while food bills will be increased."
Government debt is accelerating. While the overall tax rate will ease significantly during the government's term, government debt will accelerate. "The government will allow the overall tax rate to fall by as much as €9-10 billion during the election period.
