#Palestine / More US Sanctions: Two West Bank Outposts and Three Settlers
The #US has imposed its second round of sanctions on Israeli settlers since President Joe #Biden's executive order, marking the first-ever sanctions on entire Israeli outposts in the West Bank. The sanctioned outposts are Moshe's Farms and Zvi's Farms, and the three settlers targeted are Zvi Bar Yosef, Neriya Ben Pazi, and Moshe Sharvit.
The decision is seen as a significant step by the Biden administration to address the issue of extremist settler violence against Palestinian and Israeli civilians in the occupied territories.
[cont'd] #SettlerViolenmce / U.S. Will Reduce Sanctions Against Settlers
According to news site Ynet,
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that following an unequivocal demand he submitted, together with #Netanyahu and the Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, the American administration has sent a letter dramatically reducing, in his words, the sanctions imposed on settlers. According to Smotrich, as a result, banks will be able to release the accounts that were completely frozen.
#theguardian / The ghost of apartheid has come back to haunt Israel and give hope to Palestinians
The parallel between the treatment of Palestinians by Israel and the apartheid regime in South Africa: a systematic campaign of oppression, dispossession, and violence against marginalized groups, language used to justify these systems and the ways in which they have been perpetuated over time. An international action is needed to address these issues and prevent further human rights abuses.
[…] Even as a teenage Zionist of the left in South Africa – before the illusions of that identity collapsed under the weight of their absurdity and I found my way into the ANC – my anti-apartheid inclinations made me especially uncomfortable that Israel was the apartheid regime’s closest ally. Many of us were appalled in 1976 when Israel hosted South African prime minister John Vorster, an avowed Nazi imprisoned during the second world war for his work in a paramilitary sabotage organisation linked to Hitler’s abwehr, his military-intelligence service. Even more so, later, when it turned out that Israel was negotiating arms deals with South Africa, which violated the UN arms embargo, and even cooperated on nuclear-weapons development.
#antisemitism vs #apartheid "The academic world is rising up against us": Hidden boycott threatens Israeli scientific research
Last week, a Zoom meeting was held with senior members of Israel's academia and young researchers. The senior academics expressed concern about what is happening and conveyed a sense of emergency. The President of the University of Haifa, Prof. Ron Rubin, recounted in a conversation that he visited the US during the war and felt manifestations of antisemitism "seeping into places where they have never been before. There is a hostile attitude towards Israelis even in places like medical schools. It is terrifying to the nth degree. In the past, the problem was focused on faculties for the humanities and social sciences, but the phenomenon is spreading to additional fields."
The missing word in this article must be #aprtheid... I do see #BDS and antisemitism mentioned, many times, but not a word about the fact the USA and European boycott of Israeli academia is a refusal to cooperate with a perceived apartheid regime.
