It's not often that I find myself in a fancy seated venue, with performers that aren't at least 30 years younger than me, but this was very good. The Necks played two 45-minute pieces (with an age-appropriate interval inbetween, appreciated by every man my age when there is beer involved), both pieces starting quietly and then slowly building up into a kind of controlled frenzy. They'll be back at Cafe Oto in April, quite tempted!
But I still have no idea how to describe their music - it's not jazz, it's not classical, and not instrumental rock, but has elements of each. And definitely at least partly improvised, as confirmed by the man sitting in the row behind me, who used to live in Essex near Stanstead but now lives in France outside Perpignan, and saw them play a completely different set last night. He incidentally also saw Stereolab at Electric Brixton on Friday, but thought the venue was horrible and is never going back there, having gotten used to French music venues that are all top-notch.

#NowListening to The Necks "Silent Night" - not exactly christmas music, mind me. By that time (rec. 1995) they'd found their formula mostly (see "White") but continued to experiment, field recordings, adding snippets of dialogue etc. creating a brooding film noir type of experience ("Black").
