I created a "Kind of Silent" playlist to feed my obsession w/ #MilesDavis In A Silent Way. Selections echo the vibe of the OG (nothing matches exactly): ethereal, proto-ambient, hypnotic, unhurried, spacious, serene, blissful, genre fluid. For patient listening, focused work, or insomnia. #GreatAlbums1980s - #TalkTalk – Spirit of Eden (1988). Never did a band committing career hara-kiri sound so assured that their new, uncommercial direction was the right path. Sharing affinities with 70s mood pieces (most obviously Floyd's DSOTM), Spirit of Eden is Mark Hollis's ode to a world of emotional strife and spiritual longing.
A great sonic experience, thanks to Tim Friese-Green's cinematic production, this LP is the one that assures Talk Talk belongs to the ages.
#GreatAlbums1980s - #TalkTalk – The Colour of Spring (1986). The UK band's third LP was the speed bump between the synth-pop of their early LPs and the brooding post-rock to come.
Still glistening with pop hooks, "Life's What You Make It" and "Living in Another World" are urgent anthems of self-actualization. On other tracks ("I Don't Believe in You," "Chameleon Day"), leader Mark Hollis begins showing the poetic angst soon to become dominant on Spirit of Eden.
#NowPlaying Sunny Ade & His Green Spot Band - The Master Guitarist Vol. 1 (African Songs Ltd, 1970). More raw than his better-known 80s records, but already a potent rhythmic and lyrical force.
