Say I wanted to do (for ), which software should I go for? Maker, selling some stuff. Parametric is a must.

I use which is great but getting pricier ($300/year). My subscription is up for renewal and I’m on the fence. I don’t know if I want to get into because I don’t trust Autodesk (free for <$1000 profit, $680/year otherwise).

Oddly enough, has a maker version now ($48/year for <$2000 profit, a bajillion otherwise).

Anything else?

Ooh... what an honor! I’m now a proud member of the #Shapr3D Gamma community. 😍

Does anyone here uses and plans to switch to , or has already made the switch?

Really thought this latest project was going to be the one that made me subscribe to #shapr3d but realized that the parametric stuff was still in beta. Back to #fusion360 for this one.

I published a new model of a simple „Skådis Paper Roll Holder“.

#3DPrinting I wasted roughly 1 hour trying to create this stupid hexagon pattern the "right" way in #Shapr3D

The "right" technique is

  • make 2 hexagons with appropriate offset
  • take 2 measurements
  • use pattern tool to repeat horizontally and vertically.

Except every time i tried with both & more than 2 repetitions it'd complain about some constraint but not tell me which. I clicked literally every point and every side NONE had constraints.

Gave up and made a bajillion copies 🤦‍♀️

as a general statement I love how #Shapr3D works, and i can generally make thins really quickly but its limitations and quirks are maddening. Worse, it's got a LOT of limitations. Many are little things that you'll hit often.

  • It only supports relative positioning. You can't move an object to a specific coordinate in 3D space
  • it can't import SVGs (have to convert to DXF first)
  • you can't measure from the edge of a circle, only the center. 🤦‍♀️

Puh, what a ride. #Design of my #BambuLab lid riser with integrated ventilation, LED strip placement and support for the BL LED Controller has been finished. Now I have to print some parts. Then assembling, testing and I’m done. 🤓

What do think?

#3DPrinting I have 2 big problems with OnShape

  1. licensing is either "never profit from this in any way" OR "hah, hobbyists 🤣!"
  2. where TinkerCAD is too much about "just combine object bodies" OnShape is the opposite extreme of "hah, interacting with object bodies?!! 🤣"

So, I've been trying #Shapr3D

I just remodeled the front section of my note card thing in Shapr3D and it was SO much easier. It's a nice conceptual balance between TinkerCad & OnShape's extremes & very affordable.

a rendering of the thing i'm replicating in OnShape. this has a lot more bits, but I was intentionally only trying to replicate teh top section.

View of the exploded cross section of my speaker. At the moment, these are all parts.

BUT: I still need to figure out where I'm going to mount the terminal, and where I'm going to route cables through it.... 🤔

    Any ideas?

I really like #Shapr3D as a modelling tool, but it goes from Basic ($0) to Pro ($299/year ex tax) with nothing in between 😩 I don't need AR, technical drawings or priority technical support, I just like the modeller.

So I may end up with TinkerCAD 🫣
