Say I wanted to do #3Dmodeling (for #3Dprinting), which #CAD software should I go for? Maker, selling some stuff. Parametric is a must.
I use #Shapr3D which is great but getting pricier ($300/year). My subscription is up for renewal and I’m on the fence. I don’t know if I want to get into #Fusion360 because I don’t trust Autodesk (free for <$1000 profit, $680/year otherwise).
Oddly enough, #SolidWorks has a maker version now ($48/year for <$2000 profit, a bajillion otherwise).
Really thought this latest project was going to be the one that made me subscribe to #shapr3d but realized that the parametric stuff was still in beta. Back to #fusion360 for this one.
#3DPrinting I wasted roughly 1 hour trying to create this stupid hexagon pattern the "right" way in #Shapr3D
The "right" technique is
make 2 hexagons with appropriate offset
take 2 measurements
use pattern tool to repeat horizontally and vertically.
Except every time i tried with both & more than 2 repetitions it'd complain about some constraint but not tell me which. I clicked literally every point and every side NONE had constraints.
as a general statement I love how #Shapr3D works, and i can generally make thins really quickly but its limitations and quirks are maddening. Worse, it's got a LOT of limitations. Many are little things that you'll hit often.
It only supports relative positioning. You can't move an object to a specific coordinate in 3D space
it can't import SVGs (have to convert to DXF first)
you can't measure from the edge of a circle, only the center. 🤦♀️
Puh, what a ride. #Design of my #BambuLab lid riser with integrated ventilation, LED strip placement and support for the BL LED Controller has been finished. Now I have to print some parts. Then assembling, testing and I’m done. 🤓
I just remodeled the front section of my note card thing in Shapr3D and it was SO much easier. It's a nice conceptual balance between TinkerCad & OnShape's extremes & very affordable.
I really like #Shapr3D as a modelling tool, but it goes from Basic ($0) to Pro ($299/year ex tax) with nothing in between 😩 I don't need AR, technical drawings or priority technical support, I just like the modeller.
