2 years of manufactured doubt and uncertainty from openSUSE
1st we were surprised to hear that openSUSE Leap was likely to be discontinued. While people waited for this to ultimately happen, they were then led to believe that it may simply change into something else, but nothing was certain. Once more, while they were waiting for the official word, another propal with more uncertainty. And with each new uncertainty, the whisper that contribution was declining
I am not the only person who feels people were stonewalled. openSUSE called for contributors and claimed they wanted help and those of us who stepped forward, were not received. —It was not just me.
If I had a vote in anything right now it would be a vote of no confidence in the leadership.
I am upset, because I am a SUSE user (both openSUSE and SUSE Enterprise). I've been a SUSE user since before they experienced the whole Novel SUSE rebrand, years ago, only to return to SUSE once more.
I do not think SUSE is lacking involvement or users or contributors. I'm someone who attempted to contribute, as did other.
But I digress. I'm upset about this nonsense, because I care.
Because whether it is Richard Brown or someone else at the helm, they need to commit to a plan of action.
2 years now, people have been facing uncertainty with openSUSE's future.
The Linux operating system, along with its ecosystem, has grown and thrived with the belief of dependability and certainty. And what uncertainty arise in the grand scheme of things tends to be small, few, and far between
Now, we have SUSE, extended a level of uncertainty 2yrs
I don't care if they stick with the normal openSUSE Leap "as is", change over to Linarite, or Slowroll. -- So long as they finally commit to something.
The whole uncertainty and doubtful future for 2 years is nonsense!
That doubt and uncertainty is not going to encourage people to contribute.
People don't rush to jump into something they fear or suspect is a sinking ship.
This mindset and association has continued for nearly 2 years, and the Linux community as a whole hasn't been given much reinsurance with any solid commitments.
You cannot make a statement (whether official or not) concerning your intentions to end a project as they did with openSUSE Leap, then place that project into a continuous state of flux and uncertainty of whether it will be continued or changed, for 2 years.
Of course, people are going to drop life flies and walk away. -- Duh! -- That should be painfully obvious.
Since 2022 it has been implied multiple times by the openSUSE Development, that openSUSE Leap was being discontinued. Then they said it wasn't being discontinued, but replaced. Once more, they said it wasn't being replaced, simply changed. Now lastly, they're saying it may remain, but either in 1 of 3 forms
Ever watch a TV network kill off a good TV show, because the new executive does not like it, but the fans keep hanging on?
Your action are now having a negative impact on SUSE Enterprise Linux, not just openSUSE.
If you don't think business keeps an eye on the development, knowing fully well that things move down the pipe, you're wrong
Today, I found out a company I have business dealing with is considering their options. They don't know what the long-term future could be with SUSE Enterprise, because the upstream seems to be in the air
And other tech outlets, big and small, just randomly drops your name for the Lulz.
2 years now of this nonsense
I doubt the whole of SUSE is suffering from mass incompetence. And if they were, I supposed the reason business is starting to be concern, would be justified. Given that alternative, personally, I'd like to believe, at the moment, there is just poor leadership somewhere
That's a lovely story, you'd like to paint. -- But people, like myself, were not just reaching out into the void on social media.
You claim no one or few if anyone cares about openSUSE Leap, and that certainly was not true. It was more than just end-users (or fans) who tried to voice themselves and reach out (myself, included).
2 years of this nonsense and you still do not know what you may or may not do with openSUSE.
@uncomfyhalomacro
I'd gladly prove you wrong, except at the moment, all my log-ins all over the openSUSE website are telling me something similar to this.
I thought this error is particularly interesting since it reads:
"Login to a profile is not available for employees yet"
At the moment, I cannot even log into the Wiki, much less to contribute code anywhere.
