This morning's news tells us that the reason Ramaphosa was so reluctant to arrest Putin if he showed up for the big BRICS conference, as required by our commitments to the ICC, is that Putin told him "I'll nuke South Africa".
According to Putin, the Russians had threatened to blow their entire nuclear arsenal on us which... I dunno, I'm not a diplomat, or a military strategist, and I'm not responsible for the safety of my nation but it just seems a bit overblown to me.
Like, somebody wanted to give us an excuse that we could lean on.
Jacob Zuma has already argued that he can't go to jail because #SouthAfrica will burn. There are maybe half a dozen more politicians who can make the same claim, plausibly.
But Ramaphosa doesn't bring plausibility into it. He believes there is a risk, it is sufficiently serious, and thus he should be allowed to ignore the law.
South African president arrives in Ukraine on peace mission
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Ukraine on Friday as part of an African peace mission, the South African presidency said on Twitter.

A growing opinion in the government and the #ANC — which Ramaphosa himself apparently shares — that Russian President Vladimir #Putin should not come to South Africa in August to attend the #BRICS summit appears to be part of the same rethink.”
