Today we have started the third round of #olive picking. I'll see if I can post the occasional picture, might have to fill in ALT text when I'm home (it's tricky to keep on taking off gloves).

Time to get those olives off the tree.

Wow, that was a super productive tree! 😍

We don't just harvest fully manually with those olive picking combs, as that would take forever:

We also use a couple of battery powered olive harvesters. These have 8 carbon fibre rods, which oscillate rapidly, shaking the olive off the tiny branches they are attached to.

Even so, it took about 90 minutes for 3 people to harvest that one tree on the right.

A person in a blue overall harvests olives using a 12v battery powered harvesting machine. Underneath the olive trees black netting is spread out.

Here's a quick one handed demonstration of the battery powered harvester.

Here you can see a bit better how we spread out the nets to catch as many as possible.

Someone still has to pick up all the ones that decide to fly even further or slip through the gaps between the nets.

All the buckets full of olives and leaves get poured onto the metal grill where someone (in this case me) has to try to separate them from each other by rubbing manically while wearing leather gloves.

We then put the leaves into boxes to feed them to our .

A plastic bucket full of olives and leaves is poured over a metal grille which sits on top of a 670l bulk storage container. A pair of leather gloves lie next to it.

Finally, I'll leave you with this stunning evening sky we were blessed with when we finished today's work. Time for bed! 😴

I've had yet another looong and tiring day of olive harvest today, but having a whole bunch of fresh #Faircamp releases to listen to made for a fun day of work!

Special shout outs to @cpacaud for the
incredible album "2021"
https://www.christianpacaud.com/musique/2021/

and the very different, but absolutely lovely "Arbeit oder Liebe" by @torstentorsten https://torstentorsten.de/faircamp/torsten-torsten-arbeit-oder-liebe/

Do yourself a favour and check them out!

I've been listening to #RadioFreeFedi all day during #OliveHarvest, but couldn't use my phone's touchscreen while wearing gloves, so I thought it'd be a great day for field testing my #RFF display prototype, using a #Pimoroni Pico Inky Pack E-paper display for the #RaspberryPiPico.

It shows the currently playing track, lets me switch between main, comfy and specialty, and I can generate a QR code to take me straight to the artist profile or their music.

#ThickTrunkTuesday #MicroPython #Olives

An old olive tree is shown standing in the middle of a large broccoli field, with some mountains and bright blue sky visible in the background. The camera slowly moves through the tree's branches, which are overladen with purple and green olives, to reveal a thick and gnarly tree trunk that is split into two main branches at hip height. On the left branch an E-paper display is balanced precariously, flickering and displaying the text "network: axwax connecting... ip: 0.0.0.0" After a short while it is updating to say "connection successful" and showing its assigned IP address. Soon after it updates again to show the artist's profile picture on the left and the song's metadata on the right, in this case: "RFF Main Channel Jason Didner - Side Effects https://jasondidnermusic.bandcamp.com/" After I repeatedly press the top button the display finally shows the currently playing song on the comfy channel, namely: "RFF Comfy Channel Neavh - Magpie https://neavh.bandcamp.com" Once I press the bottom button labelled "C", the artist's profile picture is replaced by a QR code taking the user to the artist's profile on the Fediverse. Finally the camera moves back a few steps goes out of focus and eventually shows a little bit more of the tree trunk and olive branches hanging down behind the display.
