I was going through my catalog and noticed the light on these three feral horses and thought it looked pretty nice. These ponies were south of Fernley, Nevada. (Note: These ponies are not Carter Reservoir Spanish mustangs that I usually post. Photo: 5/7/2017.)
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The National Park Service has turned to the public to help decide whether the famous wild horses in North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park should stay or go.
I reside in #Colorado, and have been photographing the wild #herds that roam the state's #PublicLands for a few years now. In 2021, I became heavily invested in this issue when I got word in that my local herd in #SandWashBasin was going to be rounded up. To me, it felt personal – I had to do something.
information and quotes to let my fellow Coloradans know what was happening to our #WildHorses.
We know that when the American people hear about what's happening to these beloved animals, they are outraged. It's our job to build public #awareness and the grassroots army necessary to rise up and advocate for the conservation of America's #mustangs and #burros.
#WildHorseWednesday! Young Cooper is feeling playful and rushes Clorox. It's the way young stallions learn and test their skills. They are tolerated and sometimes educated by the older guys as long as they remain respectful.
#WildHorseWednesday! Two wild stallions greet each other on a dusty ridge. AKA 'you put your left foot out', lol. They snorted, pawed and went on their way.
It's #FoalFriday! And everyone loves the babies, even big brothers. I love this family scene as it shows the close connection between family members in the wild.
Last year, the American Wild Horse Campaign (#AWHC) released an explosive investigative #report that detailed the devastating and deadly consequences of the Bureau of Land Management's ( #BLM ) cash incentive-based adoption program, known as the Adoption Incentive Program ( #AIP ). The AIP pays individuals $1,000 per #animal to #adopt up to four wild, unhandled BLM #mustangs and #burros a year.
The McCullough Peaks Herd Management Area (HMA) is home to approximately 181 #mustangs who have been successfully managed with fertility control since 2011. Now, the #BLM is asking the public for input on an Environmental Assessment (EA) that would significantly reduce the population, destroy beloved family bands, and threaten the genetic health of the entire herd.
The stud on the right in the first image is "War Paint." He takes no guff from nobody. After he ran off all of the other studs around the waterhole he came after me. I tried to spook him off but he came back. I now carry a plastic trash bag when I'm photographing feral horses. A rattling trash bag is the boogieman that all horses have nightmares about! (Carter Reservoir Spanish Mustangs, Vya, Nevada, 2017.)
Wild horse hair, he don't care! A majestic black stallion from the south Onaqui herd, known as Cash, looks out over the range.
If you ever forget there is magic in the world, just go hang with the wild ones.
#WildHorseWednesday! Another shot of Clorox and Cooper. Sometimes those teenagers want to test their limits, lol. Band stallion Clorox straightens young Cooper out with a 'kiss' on the cheek. This type of 'challenge' is a training exercise.
Today I celebrate the life of Oreo! An iconic Onaqui stallion lost last week due to injuries. It's part of life in the wild, the cost of freedom some say.
A fixture of the north herd for many years, he was a band stallion and had run with the bachelors. He was a benevolent teacher of the young.
#MustangMonday A wild pinto stallion known as Charger watches over his family. A bay mare, her yearling colt, and 4 week old filly. They are a part of the north Onaqui herd.
The wild roan pinto stallion known as Clorox watches the rear as his band moves ahead of him. Spring is a tense time for band stallions as mating season draws lots of attention from competing males. They keep their bands close and as much distance from others as possible.
#WildHorseWednesday! 'Stallion school' on the north Onaqui range. The young grullo, Cooper, is getting a lesson from band stallion, Clorox. Sparring keeps the skills sharp for the older stallion and teaches the younger one skills he will need to win and keep his own band one day.
