C'mon @nytimes, that wasn't a "challenge" to scientific orthodoxy (whatever that means) - it's been clear from the very beginning that none of the #radiocarbon samples presented for an extremely old #pyramid at #GunungPadang came from archaeological contexts.

World’s Oldest Pyramid Found Not in Egypt or Americas, But in Indonesia
It’s not just an oddly shaped hill, after all.
Humans began sculpting a small hill into a larger pyramid almost 25,000 years ago, and then building layers of sand and rocks on top of that.

Spent some time re-reading that #GunungPadang #14C paper which makes the round, supposedly supporting the idea of a #Paleolithic monumental #pyramid in #Indonesia.

But to be honest, I'm still scratching my head how this passed peer review.

Which, again, begs the question how this could've passed peer review - in particular considering the well-known #pseudoarchaeological narrative surrounding the whole site.

In present form these data do not at all help to clarify anything regarding #GunungPadang, I'm afraid.

PS: For a closer look on said problematic narratives surrounding the site of #GunungPadang have a look e.g. here at @cfeagans thoroughly referenced article:

The pyramid of Gunung Padang in Indonesia began construction in the deep past, a new study claims, and was built by an unknown ancient people.
