Does anyone have recommendations for messaging apps that can be used offline? I'm thinking of singing that can be used in disasters - mostly to keep in contact with family and friends. Use android.

@RonniesaurusHex i use #cheogram, a variant of the 'conversations' app. you can queue up messages with no connection; they'll get sent when you have coverage. probably not novel. but you can subscribe to having a virtual phone number that's not tied to the cellular network - any wifi connection will do. then you can sms with any regular phone number and they shouldn't know the difference. not to talk you ear off, but if you're curious hit me up

@Samsy @arbocenc #XMPP can run bridges (called "Transports" or "Gateways" in XMPP terms) since the early ages. And nowadays, there are modern ones with tight integrations: #Slidge being a flagship (including a #Matrix gateway), and I'm myself working on ActivityPub gateway and soon a email one with #Libervia. #Cheogram is also working on SMTP gateway. And #Biboumi is the flagship #IRC gateway.

As it is a long, long tradition Conversations is available for free on the Google Play store for the last week of December.

This tradition was originally born so that when I meet people at Chaos Communication Congress and they ask what I do, they have an easy way to install Conversations. In that regard it's a very special year as we are seeing the return of CCC.

However if you are meeting loved ones to celebrate something else these days that’s fine too.🎄

Prefer to recommend that folks install #Conversations, #Cheogram, and other forks from F-Droid:

Just learnt that (apparently) supports running apps over , but I'm not able to figure out how it works. Anyone used it? :xmpp:

@mattj hmm, I saw that but sending the .xdc file to my friend just resulted in...a file attachment 😣

Guess I'll try with #Cheogram directly and see if I have better luck!

the last days, i happily did some basic work for a calendar “chat app”; testing the new export/import APIs.

in practise, you can eg. use a joint calendar in a group - e2ee and network isolated - and share selected events (.ics files) via other channels (webxdc - and so the calendar app - works experimentally with 🥳 and with )

What's the status of in ?

I've found this 0 but it shows as experimental so I was wondering whether discussions were happening somewhere or if one can add a +1 about it somewhere.

I know it will sound stupid or just not a priority to some people but unfortunately, stickers are a requirement for many of my friends when it comes to .

@silmathoron Not so well. #Moxxy ( https://moxxy.org/ ) is AFAIK the only client that has implemented XEP-0449. #Movim has their own old system that I think only #Pidgin somewhat understands otherwise, and #Cheogram recently added a sticker-picker but it just shares http_upload images. #xmpp #jabber

@kris
Contrary to the confusing title, XEP-0449 is primarily describing a way to distribute sticker packs via #XMPP. Actually sending a sticker to someone uses standard file transfers.

Rather than supporting XEP-0449 sticker packs that don't exist, #Cheogram is compatible with the same stickers #Signal uses which are widely available. You can add sticker packs yourself, and save stickers you receive.
