“The success of Threads in Taiwan shows that politics is still one of the main reasons people come to a text-based social network, but it also highlights Meta’s uncomfortable relationship with political content on its platforms.”
The Taiwanese factor also means that #Threads has gotten somewhat popular among more young & liberal Malaysian Chinese users (who often study in Taiwan due to Taiwan’s recognition of UEC & are inspired by its relative liberal values), Hong Kong users as well as liberals from mainland China, and there has been a lot of conversation & arguments going on between these groups. It’s quite a different world from what anglophone users might encounter on the platform.
& because these sinophone Threads users have little prior experience with Twitter, they are discovering what a text-based social media platform can do with fresh eyes.
