I have obtained a beautiful IBM ThinkPad 560. Unfortunately, there are no signs of life when power is applied. However, it's in such lovely shape that I have no choice but to repair this.

It's just as beautiful inside as it is outside

Unfortunately, all that effort to replace the soldered CMOS battery based on a reddit comment were for naught. Will begin investigating the power supply situation from the 16V barrel jack on.

I've replaced the battery module with a more reasonable CR1616 coin cell with tabs spot welded directly to the battery.

@xan i wish you a fruitful effort in diagnosing and a swift restoration of fanspin

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

@Yuki Aha! I've japesed you, for you see, there are no fans in this contraption!

Yuki,
@Yuki@xantronix.social avatar

@xan a fanless doohickey? Now I've seen everything!

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

@Yuki My Toshiba Portégé T3600CT hasn't a fan, either!

@xan gasps!

I've verified all six fuses I could find on the board, and they all function properly.

I have placed an order with Digi-Key for some replacement Rubycon capacitors for the DC-DC board. The fact that DC-DC boards are going on eBay for more than I paid for this whole machine is very telling that this is a frequent point of failure. The fact that the capacitors are rated awfully close to their operating voltages is also suspicious.

Today I have finally chosen to replace all the aluminium electrolytic capacitors on the DC-DC board of my #ThinkPad 560.

Let's hope this works.

This did not improve matters. At least, no magic smoke was released, either.

Resorting to more extreme measures, I'm pulling the piss tapes and the tree saps out of the archives. That's right. Kapton tape, flux, and hot air, to see if a reflow will fix anything. (Seriously the Kapton tape smells like...pungent)

#thinkpad #retrocomputing

Same drill as before; the DC-DC board's mainboard interconnect and surrounding components protected with Kapton tape. All freshly reflowed. Fingers crossed.

@xan@xantronix.social avatar

The reflow did not fix my issue. However, I did narrow things down to definitely the DC-DC board itself: When it is plugged in, I observe ~0.3V in places where I would expect 3V3 or 5V. Without the board plugged in, I observe no current. Therefore I will try replacing the MAX-series chips on the DC-DC converter:

• MAX782
• MAX797

HAHAHAHAHAHA I FIXED MY IBM #ThinkPad 560

That's right, it's POSTing now

#retrocomputing

Yuki,
@Yuki@xantronix.social avatar

@xan fuck yeah!

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

Reassembled, but, uhh, his display is quite busted! Wow! At least he's definitely POSTing

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

Removed the front bezel of the display assembly in order to access the brightness/contrast controls, and to inspect the panel for a part number/FRU.

@xan My PowerBook 1400cs screen is almost the same as your Thinkpad but even worse :P

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

@retrotechtom I wish I had the facilities to properly disassemble the panel to do some investigation (it appears to be a common failure mode on this panel). I'll maybe keep this one around after I get a replacement, one hopefully I don't end up spending more than I have spent on the machine originally...

@xan you are amazing

@Pyrrhlin let's not get ahead of ourselves

Yuki,
@Yuki@xantronix.social avatar

@xan fanspin!!*

*(Not fanspin because no fan, but power led!!)

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@xan that sounds like an "oof" reply

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

@gizmomathboy How do you mean?

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@xan sounds like a lot of work to swap out chips and such

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

@gizmomathboy Oh it's not a huge deal! Just gotta use Kapton tape to protect the surrounding areas, and hit each chip with the hot air gun until it moves out of the way. Soldering the replacements is just being steady and checking your work.

Jakan,

@xan all the magic smoke💨

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

@Jakan It's all kept neatly inside of my components! Now, that replacement MAX782 voltage regulator sure was expensive on the secondary market...

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@xan oooh, pretty

i tried to guess from the vibe of the PCB which CPU generation it is and landed on Pentium; they're so distinctive!

(not ceramic enough for 386, too many SRAM-looking packages for Pentium III)

Yuki,
@Yuki@xantronix.social avatar

@xan what a beautiful machine, the screen asymmetry is particularly stunning
