After a full month with my #Steam OS console, I can safely say that it's the best gaming experience I've ever had: start a game on the TV and pick it up later on the #SteamDeck, amazing performance + all the commodities of Steam OS!

And yet, I'd say it's not worth it for most people to build something like this, compared to a #Playstation5 for example.

So, let's see what I picked, the issues I encountered, and the general experience!

Nuuskis,

@thelinuxEXP Mark my works, the next gen ultimate gaming machine is Apple Silicon with Linux and gaming controller friendly user interface. It can already emulate PS3 games.

@thelinuxEXP imo it may be pricier, but there are huge advantages to building your steamos machine: first is durability and swapability, instead of buying a new 600€ console evry few years. Second is portability as you talked about: no other ecosystem lets you play one title on a machine and resume where you lfet off on another. Third: you can turn your limits into advantages: with a tiny bit of IoT you can have rcon outlets, or just wol your device, even natively (ie the freebox app 🇨🇵)

dunelayn,

@thelinuxEXP yes and no :) if you can buy them like a steam deck the price could go down and more people would buy it like the steam deck. But for everybody else yeah its not that apieling...

matkeith,

@thelinuxEXP you’ll get no judgement from me for buying a prebuilt pc. I personally have a difficult time seeing small details like the m.2 screw holes. Getting older sucks..

edwin,

@thelinuxEXP question - you say you can’t boot the pc remotely, did you try wake on lan? I use an app on my phone to send the magic packet to the broadcast address so I don’t have to faff with dynamic ips - worked perfectly on chimera/opensuse.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@edwin I didn’t, but I’ll check it out!

edwin,

@thelinuxEXP you may need to enable it in your bios settings etc. it just worked on chimera but needed a bit of config on opensuse. You also have to use a hardwired port as usb/virtual devices won’t work and you have to be on the same lan. All of this was painful learning for me…

edwin,

@thelinuxEXP the app I use is called “wake me up” on iOS btw. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/wake-me-up-wake-on-lan/id1465416032

tartington,

@thelinuxEXP i think the dream build would be a small form factor build (maybe with the A4-H20) that has 2 SSDs, one for SteamOS and another for a linux distro of your choosing for work. and then you'll be able to carry them from desk to TV and boot via grub.

cl3mcg,

@thelinuxEXP Salut Nick. I liked your video. There’s one point you didn’t mention. You said you will play on this machine instead of the PS5《because you love Linux》, and I get it of course, but one of the most important plus of a Steam/Linux PC is that you are also “liberated” from the paid online services from the proprietary consoles. And the online perks are not “that” cheap once you consider the average 6~7 years lifespan of a console. I mean freedom, open, blah blah blah, usual stuff 😀. A+

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@cl3mcg I don’t pay for the online services because I don’t play online at all, so this is an advantage that is lost on me personally 😅

I absolutely despise competitive multiplayer, the only games I like playing are single player, or coop games with friends :)

bigattck,

@thelinuxEXP very misleading, it’s not steamOS, not Steam Deck, nothing. You just copy a Linux distribution version from what someone believes to be the open source and heavily modified the code. I bet you can make the pc start with your controller if you start really digging into C++ or the language it’s on. Hate YouTubers like you.

@thelinuxEXP Hey, I have that case!

It's much bigger than it looks.

upwind1284,

@thelinuxEXP weird how Chimera didn't work with ps5 controller for you. Linux gremlins I guess. My PC has been mothballed under the TV cabinet for best part of a year and is currently on Chimera OS. For the most part it works really well. Is there a price point where it would be worth it?

WohaoGast, (edited )

@thelinuxEXP I want a deck now that theres sos content
I've always wanted a deck, but I really want 1 now.
(Maybe steamOS will become amazing if enough coverage)

@thelinuxEXP I have a setup on my TV running ChimeraOS instead. I didn't have many of the issues you had, except for the default resolution being 720p. Hopefully Valve can update this in the future to change the "default" resolution when connected to a TV.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@voytrekk I tried Chimera but it couldn’t connect to any of my controllers so I gave up quickly!

@thelinuxEXP I was going to comment halfway through the video to try it, but then I saw that part. It is a shame that bluetooth pairing didn't work, because I think the experience with ChimeraOS is pretty great otherwise.

@thelinuxEXP "And yet, I'd say it's not worth it for most people to build something like this, compared to a #Playstation5 for example." Well, Steam Machines did flop after all.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@etua_en It was a completely different situation though. They flopped because no one talked about them and because they couldn’t play anything at the time :)

etua_en,
@etua_en@ieji.de avatar

@thelinuxEXP I feel like they were overexposed given the state of the Linux gaming at the time. Getting Alienware onboard was a huge stretch. The point is that not many people would want to buy something with the price of a PC and the capabilities of a gaming console. Valve found its hardware niche in the handhelds, but I doubt they would repeat the Steam Machines experiment even with the current landscape.

killed2,

@thelinuxEXP
What a coincidence as I did almost the same thing on my gaming PC last weekend. I used Chimera OS, on my system everything works great. I installed ReFind so it is easier for me to boot a regular Distro for Tasks that require a regular Linux with an encrypted drive, but for gaming on the couch I really love the Steam UI.
