The Nintendo PlayStation

Before Sony would enter the video game market they worked with Nintendo to create a console capable of playing both SNES cartridges and CD-ROM games based on Sony’s Super CD format.

The console was never released due to disagreements over profit and license sharing with each company wanting the majority share of the pie.

Thanks to this the two companies parted ways leaving Sony free to take what they’d learned developing the Nintendo PlayStation and releasing their own games console, the PlayStation.

The Nintendo PlayStation never saw the light of day but without it we wouldn’t have had 5 generations of PlayStation consoles and the gaming industry would be unrecognisable.

ChronosWing,

One does exist, but only one and it sold for $300k sometimes back in 2020. Not even sure if it was functional.

rich,

It was functional - Ben heck got it working iirc.

d4s even created a game that actually runs on it using the dumped BIOS playstation.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Boss_Gaiden

I’ve got the game on my MiSTer FPGA’s SNES core which has it supported as an additional chip. The game is surprisingly good!

ChronosWing,

Well correction, it runs super famicom games no problem but no one was able to get the cd function working, including Ben Heck.

HawlSera,

Was the CD Function even real?
