As you may have noticed, the pace of these announcements has slowed down a bit. Indeed, I decided to post only one per month; I think that’s enough. This month, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. Here we go!
📉 The bad news is that our number of active users is slowly decreasing: it recently dropped below 300.
The hype of the last few months has probably died down a bit, some people may have moved to another instance, and the others may be logging in a little less often, which is totally fine. I just hope the people who stayed appreciate it!
🙏 Anyway, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our faithful members and especially those who support our instance financially: mastodon.design would not exist without your precious help, so thanks again!
📩 The good news is that I have decided to reopen registration! Anyone can sign up, but I will still need to approve each new request manually to avoid spam and know who’s joining our server.
So if you have friends or co-workers that you think might want to join our instance, particularly those that are from an underrepresented gender or ethnicity, please tell them to go to https://mastodon.design/about and click the Create account button!
:mastodon: If they use the Mastodon official mobile app to sign up, they will be able to see the new onboarding experience.
As Eugen Rochko just announced on the Mastodon blog, you now have two separate options on the signup page: “Join mastodon.social” or “Pick my own server”. I let you guess which one is the primary button and what the consequences of this design decision will be in the Mastodon instances landscapes.
#️⃣ Finally, I would like to share a nice project created by @dansup, the man behind @pixelfed: the Fediverse People Directory!
He just redesigned it, and it allows you to find people to follow based on topics (hashtags). To add your account, all you have to do is add the #fedi22 hashtag to your bio, don’t forget some topic hashtags you're interested in, and submit your account!
