Last month I took cuttings from 17 old apple trees growing in an abandoned poor farm orchard.

My goal is to identify the varieties that were planted about 100 yrs ago. (See post from March 20 for more info.)

About 2 weeks ago, I grafted cuttings onto rootstock. Today I planted these little trees at a friend's farm.

Back-ups are always good, so I also grafted onto a vigorous young tree at my urban microfarm. These branches should start bearing fruit in 3 or 4 yrs.

Recently grafted apple trees inside a large plastic storage bin--an orchard in a box! A red grafting knife for scale (approx 4 inches long). Roots of the rootstocks are covered in soil. Small cuttings are attached to the tops of the rootstock. The graft unions are wrapped in plastic tape.
