Guess which new colemak user is up to the 70-80 wpm range? :)

Still a ways to go to get back up to my previous 115-125 range, but hey this is great progress and it no longer feels excruciatingly slow!

@benjaminhollon
I support this. :)
I went from 80-90 wpm to like 4-8wpm when I first changed. I'm sitting at a comfy 60-90 wpm. Occasionally my dyslexia switches my ring fingers. Or I'll have the correct column just the wrong row. I'm so used to Ortholinear now. Staggered just feels so weird and cramped.

@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@Wyatt
I made sure I knew the locations of all keys before I went cold-turkey, so I was at about 20wpm at that point. A huge fall from 120wpm. XD

zbecker,

@benjaminhollon

I have been wnting to switch to for a while, but then I would have to redo all the vim bindings as well as all of my probably 1000s, of keybindings throughout all of my programs.

My and configs alone have hundreds.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@zbecker
Yeah, I'm still working a bit on that, but it wasn't as tough as I was expecting.

zbecker,

@benjaminhollon

Yeah, I suppose that one could write a bash script to change all of your text based configs...

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@zbecker
Huh, I hadn't thought of that. An interesting idea.

rfmejia,

@zbecker @benjaminhollon It took me a while, but I decided to just use the same vim mappings under colemak. It forced drastic changes to my muscle memory - which was helpful overall to learning the new layout.

I took a big productivity dip during the transition, but I'm glad I switched to it during the slow Dec/Jan work weeks.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@rfmejia @zbecker
I just remapped nei to make the hjkl positions still work, then remapped the actions that were under those keys. It took some doing, and isn't a perfect solution, but mostly works great.

phuhl,

@zbecker @benjaminhollon Not to be discouraging but if you didn't start moving to Colemak: Don't.

Yes it's cool, yes it feels good. But it's not worth it, using any computer but your own becomes a real hassle!

My experience anyways :D

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@phuhl @zbecker
That's definitely a valid viewpoint. That's what kept me from switching for a long time. I finally was won over, though. I very infrequntly use someone else's computer, and I can often use my own QMK keyboard with it anyway to keep my keymap, so I'm not particularly worried.

phuhl,

@benjaminhollon @zbecker Ah, that keyboard hack is interesting. That will help you out a lot, I guess!

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@phuhl @zbecker
Absolutely!

I also use mouse keys, where when holding tab hjkl/hnei moves around the mouse pointer, so using the QMK board helps me bring that along with me too.

taxorubio,
@taxorubio@fosstodon.org avatar

@zbecker @benjaminhollon I have considered having two different layouts for normal/insert modes. I dan't know if it's doable, but it's an option if you want to keep your muscle memory

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@taxorubio @zbecker
I think I've read a guide to that, before I switched.

simendsjo,
@simendsjo@fosstodon.org avatar

@zbecker @benjaminhollon I've been using Programmer Dvorak for twelve years, and decided to not change any keybindings. Other than hjkl movement, bindings are mnemonic, not positional. "Change in block" would go from cib to ign... It's better to keep the mnemonic bindings and relearn the position on the keyboard.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@simendsjo @zbecker
Yup, I just rebound hjkl, since I do actually use those frequently.

simendsjo,
@simendsjo@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon @zbecker I even kept those, otherwise I would loose dhtn! So I use jpcv ;) While I still use these all the time, I use plenty of other means of navigations too, so it's not too bad. Still worth it to avoid RSI, but it took time before the muscle memory was rewritten.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

@simendsjo @zbecker
I have no idea where those are on dvorak. XD

On colemak, h is the same as qwerty, which meant one less key to rebind. I figured it was worth it to do three keys.

    Yeah, I'm still considering that. I'm honestly liking it as is, but I'll take a closer look at those.

    @sotolf
    Yeah, it's less of a big deal for me, I think. I'm perfectly fine with middle columns. Pinky overuse is my bigger deal. It seems to be especially the case on my right pinky with colemak, but that may just be because I'm hitting backspace more ofteh than I'm used to.

    No, I use Caps for Escape. On hold it triggers a layer with a bunch of other stuff, so I can do caps+s (on colemak; it was caps+d on qwerty) do backspace as well.

    It's just such a stretch to that top left corner, though. And on my 60% board, I don't have that key there. Most people on 60% boards have it instead of the `/~ key, then have that key under some sort of layer/modifier, but I actually use that key a ton in my programming, so I prefer to have it dedicated.

    Oh, absolutely. I'd love a thumb cluster. I'm seriously considering getting a Keeb.io Iris once I'm back in the US. I think a split keyboard could be really great for me.

    I'd still have to use my laptop keyboard in class to take notes, though, so I'd have to get used to two different keymappings, one for laptop and one for when back home with my keyboard. I think I can figure it out, but it's non-ideal.

    @sotolf
    I've aggressively remapped all my modifiers.

    • meta/cmd/super/whatever-you-call-it - left of space. Tapping is "home". I also have it replacing the [{ key for easier access, though I'm not dead-set on that yet.
    • alt/option - right of space. Tapping is "end".
    • control - holding "return". Or using the keys one slot further out from meta and alt, if that's easier (usually it's not).

    @sotolf
    Eh, it's not too bad. I can adjust if I need to. Or I can just plug in my QMK board and have all my remappings follow me, OS-agnostic, with no setup required since it's all firmare-level mapping.

    Yeah, I'm not usually carrying it, but if I knew I'd be doing work on another computer ahead of time I'd probably throw it in my bag and bring it along.

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

    @sotolf
    And I get not wanting to give up altgr. I don't type in languages that need it much, and when I do need an accent for French or something, I just use my Compose key, but if English weren't my first language or I needed to do more extensive typing in another language I'd probably want it too.

    I get it, then. I might go for one of those low-profile boards (QMK still, ideally) to try and be able to always keep it in my bag, but I might decide it's not worth the effort.
