(They didn’t want people modding their Model-T’s into tractors, either). This is one of the famous stories in the history of technology about how companies shut down the freedom to tinker. I wouldn’t be surprised if GM sets this service up as a subscription to ensure they get the double payout and force lucrative competition with the grid providers.
