Okay, so autosave saved the day. I stayed home to work on a new section of a grant and have not saved any aspect of it, not once all day. My computer completely crashed—this never ever happens to me.

Lo and behold I lost not even one letter.

As part of grant writing, vim autosave https://vi.stackexchange.com/questions/74/is-it-possible-to-make-vim-auto-save-files and a cronjob to git commit and git push does it for me.

All modern software should be “crashware”: state ought to be always saved no matter what, and with versioning.

At this point I don't have patience for any other text editor. Either a text editor actually gets out of my way and let me edit and comment and version my text, or it's not even an option. Visual mode selection followed by "+y to copy and paste onto browser text areas is often the next step nowadays, unless I can upload a PDF via latex markup.
