TIL: It makes virtually no difference if the PS5 is in rest mode or "completely off". That's not because of great engineering that makes the rest mode extremely power efficient. Nope "off" just means technically nothing.
Power consumption in Rest Mode: 1.5 watts.
Power consumption "off": 1.3 watts.
That would take about 200 days to use an additional kWh.
I thought the difference would be as huge as for the Xbox where Rest Mode uses 13 watts an "off" uses 0.5 watts.
The difference here is, Rest Mode for the Xbox is technically irrelevant as the console starts from a cold boot in about 6 seconds (my tv takes longer) and Quick Resume takes out the other reason for the need of a Rest mode.
Interesting here is: The Xbox still makes updates when it's in "off" mode. The PS5 not. So why uses the PS5 still 1.3 watts?
Now the only reason I want the PS5 to be completely off is the annoying orange light. But I guess I can live with that with the added benefits of the Rest Mode.
@kaiserkiwi@revengeday put an RGB light sensitive diode over the LED. Then add it to home assistant.
You'll see the status in HA and won't be bothered by the LED. Win-Win*
After you fiddled with it for 3 years to get the right position for reliable color-detection only to have the little one pull it off the console so you'll have to start over. Please don't ask how I know.
@SynAck I thought about that but then I also wouldn't see if the console is on or has any issues. I don't mind the other reasons for the light, but I don't see any good reason to have a light on in rest mode.
I wonder if 0.1 watts of the additional power consumption comes from this light. 😅
@kaiserkiwi It does. That's how I lost some progress in Pacific Drive while in sleep mode 🙈 I've since disabled that feature. Might just be system updates, I don’t know.
@donnyglover I especially meant updates in "off" mode. No update ever was done for me there. I didn't use the PS5 for a few months at the end of the last year and had to do the system updates after I started it again.
But this progress lost thing is one of the best cases for Quick Resume on the Xbox. I just never have to worry about this as a system update doesn't clears it.
I hope at least the PS5 Pro will get this feature.
