Probably anything would be better than nothing to some small extent, but muslin's weave is so loose it's unlikely to stop aerosols in a useful way. Getting the kid vaccinated would seem like a good idea. COVID-19 vaccination is available at 6 months. Same for flu. RSV is available pre-birth (vaccinating the mother) and at 8 months. Again, I can't give medical advice. I'm just a former science teacher who has opinions.
In a second career, I worked for a maker of passenger jet cabin air filters (among many other things). I knew the person who tested them for many years. He never detected a single virus penetrating one of our filters.
So: keep the air jet over your head open and pointed at the infant. The air coming out of the nozzle is highly purified (and also contains some outside air, which is very likely to contain zero virus).
