@quietmarc Yeah. We're supposed to reply light-heartedly but, like, the planet's on fire and we're still watering lawns for status. People need to wake up.
(Allistics: “No, actually, you need to lighten up.”)
@Cassandra Because my anxiety disorder is common knowledge to people around me, I get told I'm "catastrophizing", and, no. Catastrophizing is when I believe I'll have no friends after saying a thing, not when I read things scientists say and feel worried.
@quietmarc An allistic mental health professional told me I was "snowballing,” meaning I should stop that line of thinking. But these are straight line consequences. Ignoring them would be living in a fantasy world. How is that a healthier choice?
@Cassandra I sometimes wonder if, in the future (if there is a future), we'll recognize how alienating this kinda thing is. I daydream of a day when the professional class wakes up and realizes they can't positive-think their way out of climate collapse, fascism, and covid.
It occurs to me this is not just an example of people trying to force me into inane / repetitive conversations (one of the reasons I found the office routine excruciating)…
it is also an example of people trying to force me into their dance of denial.
Nope.
It is inauthentic.
I’m not going to pretend on command that things are okay.
We don't have to talk about things, but if you bring them up I'm replying with truth.
