I recently bought my first electric vehicle (EV). It has been an interesting
adjustment, but am I glad I switched from diesel?

@kev I bought a plugin hybrid when we absolutely needed a second vehicle (Ford C-Max Energi) and love it! It's the best of both worlds, pure EV for around the town trips with a gas generator when you need to go really far. I don't think I would go full EV given how we sometimes need to make longer trips and the charging infrastructure still sucks in the US (unless you pay for Tesla).

@kev "it was so expensive to run and quite frankly, a waste. I could afford it, but it felt like I was just throwing money down the drain"

Reasons why I've never owned a car number one: I have never felt that I have enough spare, unwanted money that buying a car seemed like a good idea.

You can buy an awful lot of very nice bicycles for the cost of a car and keeping it on the road. I really should update my "list of bicycles" page.... https://moz.geek.nz/mozbike/

@kev I have an EV since 2 years now, and I won't return back to petrol car. Like I've wrote on my blog at this moment : yes I regret my previous Honda Civic, but no I don't regret this one (Cupra Born).

But recently, it's more my need for a car that is put into question. I'm seriously thinking about switching to an electric moto instead of a car.

@kev Very similar to my experience. I’m nearly 9 months in and don’t regret it one bit.

@kev When I got an EV, I didn't have range anxiety. Instead, I had charge rate anxiety. I got a 7.7kW supply for the car and then realized I didn't need overnight charging. Now I charge it using 3kW at home, and even though it takes a whole day to go from discharged to full charge, it isn't a problem.

@kev what Kia does your missus drive, if you don't mind me asking?

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@xpil Of course not, it’s a Sportage. We’ve had a few Kias over the years, they’re great cars.

@kev same here, we've been driving various Kias since, like, ever. Cee'd,then two Sportages, and for the last 2 years a PHEV Sorento. They're great.

@xpil Yeah, this is our second Sportage and we had a little Rio (before kids).

@kev if your next car is EV9, I'm going to be very jealous.

@kev I'm happy that I'm able to live without a car (even though there are many train strikes currently). But should I ever really need a car, I will get an EV.
