If it's taking a long time to read and write files from my raspberry pi's SD card, does that mean it's about to die?

@christianp an option is to boot from the SD card but have the root partition on another drive. Once the boot is finished, the only reason to touch the SD card is to update the boot options. This is how I (try) to set up my Raspis (that word looks wrong but I refuse to put an apostrophe!)

@christianp not guaranteed, but very likely yes. Time to make sure you have another copy of anything important on there and get another card lined up anyway

@radicalabacus all the real data is on an external drive, but yes, it'll be a knacker to set up again from scratch so I'm taking a backup!
