within the last year or so @Posit has taken a big tranche of venture capital. VC wants one thing: a massive return, 10x minimum. there are two ways to get that. first is to take a company public. I don't think that's likely here. second is a buy out by a major player like Oracle, Microsoft, Amazon, or another of that ilk. I guess this is what posit's sugar daddy is likely angling for. this isn't unprecedented in the world. who else remembers Revolution R?

@davidbraze @Posit what are you basing the assertion of VC capital on? I’ve seen nothing to that effect.

@Cmastication @davidbraze @Posit I have no idea at all how reliable or trustworthy these sites are but two seem to indicate they have taken VC capital:

https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/99302-41

https://www.cbinsights.com/company/rstudio/financials

The second link gives one name, Baseline Ventures which I gather has invested in instagram, twitter, among many other things.

@Cmastication early investment from baseline venture and general catalyst is mentioned in a report on their website … https://www.rstudio.com/assets/img/451_Reprint_RStudio_4FEB2020.pdf. No idea on current situation but something feels like its changed. Hopefully as a PBC they have some leeway for transparency to their customers and users.

@_TimTaylor @awong234 @davidbraze @Posit that capital mentioned was > 10 years ago. That’s a far cry from Dave assertion that they’ve taken VC in the last year or so.

I don’t understand where these assertions that everything is changing because of a recent influx of VC are originating.

@Cmastication
Thought you meant generally. No idea about the recent assertion save links @awong234 shared. @davidbraze @Posit

@Cmastication
You have now sparked my interest though - Brighton Park Capital invested in 2021 which ties in with the link
@awong234 shared. Who was the mystery 2022 investor? Feel like a poor mans sherlock holmes 🕵️ @davidbraze @Posit

@_TimTaylor @awong234 @davidbraze @Posit oh interesting! I hope you have a pipe and deer stalker hat!

benschneider,

@davidbraze @Posit how did you hear/read about Posit and VC funding? I just assumed that Posit was doing layoffs because of the common tech story right now of higher interest rates + having overhired during the low interest rates in 2020 and the economic recovery period

@benschneider @davidbraze @Posit I'd be interested in a citation too.

AFAIK they're still a public benefit corporation; the latest annual report I can find is from 2021
https://posit.co/about/pbc-report/ "To fulfill its beneficial purposes, RStudio intends to remain an independent company over the long term."

The RStudio-to-Posit FAQ states that nothing will change: https://posit.co/blog/rstudio-is-now-posit/

The latest B corporation report is from 2022 (I think):

https://www.bcorporation.net/en-us/find-a-b-corp/company/rstudio/

@benschneider @davidbraze @Posit I am curious, though, if anyone can help locate later reports. 2021 annual report: https://posit.co/about/pbc-report/ says "As a PBC, RStudio publishes an annual report that describes the public benefit we have created, along with how we seek to provide public benefits in the future. This is the third of these reports." Presumably at least a 2022 report should be available somewhere, even if the 2023 report isn't out yet since it's still early in Jan 2024?

@bbolker @benschneider @davidbraze I tried several times to find other reports and I wasn't able. It doesn't seem they are public if they were written. This seems like the old canary document companies used to use, if it is not present you know what it means...

    @thomas_mock @bbolker @benschneider @davidbraze Great, thanks for explaining how the reports work for "B Corps". Looking forward to reading the next one.
