It's why I and several folks in my cohort didn't go on to get a PhD after my M.S., even 20 years ago: the loss of autonomy over where I get to live in order to have a job in my field was the biggest of several big things that made that path unappealing. (Acknowledging that my demographic is very over-represented in STEM, especially within my field).

@Geojoek @afewbugs yeah not that it matters too much in the sense that i'm an old straight white dude, but after already having moved to 3 new countries, i just got tired of it & that was a major factor in giving up on the research career. & if you have reasons why moving is even more onerous, it's obvious what effect that's going to have.
