I recently had to transcode my entire video library. I’m doing the transcoding on an ASUS mini PC with integrated graphics, and it would be an understatement to say that it’s taking a long-ass time.
So I was wondering: Are there any mini PCs that have a dedicated GPU slot (doesn’t have to be for full-size GPUs), or mini PCs that have those laptop dedicated GPUs?
This machine would be running 24/7 as a server, so I want it to eat as little power a possible.
@davidbures Not removable but I have a Minisforum NUC17 I think? It has a 3070 laptop GPU that stays cool enough not to thermal throttle after 10 minutes. Bigger than a true mini PC tho, more like a gaming console form factor. Very thin and significantly taller and wider.
@evn I have a Pi 4, but I need something with a lot of encoding / decoding power. I’m running the transcoding on a mini PC with a Ryzen 5 5500U, which is much more performant than any Pi, and even that is maxed at 100% GPU utilization.
Ideally, it would be a low-power CPU paired with a GPU.
@evn I’m transcoding various formats and containers into Matroska HEVC, so my entire library is in one format and container. I’d say the majority of the library is H264, with some H263, mainly mp4s
@davidbures Can you share any of this info: What resolution? Framerate? Bit depth / rate? What’s the total length / file size of the videos you intend to transcode?
@evn I’m getting around 10 FPS on average. I think my ideal would be 35+, but ~25 would perhaps be more realistic. I don’t really have much experience with transcoding.
