Instead, you are required to make a legally binding affirmation ("Gelöbnis"), which however does not require the invocation of any supreme being. The law, where it prescribes the wording of the affirmation, only says that "the addition of a religious formula is permitted." So you can add "so help me god" or likewise, but you never have to.

@chrisjrn You sure? See example below. It does include the phrase "so help me god", which does make it a (religious) oath by default. Which you can opt-out of, but my point was that in Austria it's entirely opt-in to invoke an imaginary friend.
