The use case is unfortunately one of multiple data types (think alignment results returned by outfit 6 from #blast or equivalent), so gotta avoid as much overhead as possible. Thought about using PDL for this (after all, the alignment tables are all integers, and one can convert sequence & query id's to integers as factors), and perhaps this is the fastest (to the computer) way to go.
